Hey! Before I come to Penn, I wanted to sort of go shopping a bit and update my wardrobe. What sort of style does Penn have? I know that everyone has their own style and all that, but most schools have some sort of overall flavor. What sort of clothes should I be looking for? I’m a girl, by the way.

And no, I’m not being shallow or fake; I just like change and thought that this transitionary period would be a good time to try out a new style. :)

I've always had the idea that Penn was preppy.

Think warm. Wool coats, sweaters, scarves, and decently thick pants will all serve you well. Styles are many and varied, reflecting the wide range of income levels. Pick clothes that you like and that are appropriate for the weather and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

And no, I don't think Penn is all that preppy. Try Princeton.

Penn is definitely preppy in general - think Vineyard Vines, Polo, Brooks Brothers, Lily Pulitzer, etc. However you'll find just about any style.

"reflecting the wide range of income levels."

You'll come to find out that a huge majority of penn comes from extremely wealthy backgrounds...you'll even wonder how some of these people got in...seriously.

honestly, just go shopping after you get to Penn.

"You'll come to find out that a huge majority of penn comes from extremely wealthy backgrounds..."

I doubt a "huge majority" come from extremely wealthy backgrounds...40% of Penn acceptees got an average aid package of $27,000...so that's 60% who are not on aid. Not everyone who's paying full-freight is "extremely wealthy" (or they might be but you wouldn't really know it...rich and spoiled are different). I'm paying the full price (and I didn't apply for aid), yet I wouldn't consider myself extremely wealthy. My wardrobe consists of stuff like Banana Republic, A/X, Gap, Urban Outfitters and a couple pairs of Diesel jeans...sure, above-average brands, but not on the level that you listed. I think you're overplaying it and painting an extremely preppy picture of a typical top private (non-engineering) school.

imho diesel jeans, banana republic and urban outfitters are relatively the same level as polo and brooks brothers, just not as old-school...if you wear them, you're running in the same "wealthy" crowd, just trying to set yourself apart.

hell, I wear lacoste... so who am I to throw stones?

My wardrobe consists of crap I bought on sale in Asia (mmmm Engrish shirts) and Penn gear. You can wear whatever you want.

Id shouldnt matter what the general wardrobe is.

Wear what you like.

I always thought that Polo and Brooks are much more "preppy" in the traditional sense of the world. Yeah, Lacoste rocks...but I don't rock the two Lacoste polos at once. And I don't pop my collar.

I'm cool like that.

"in the traditional sense of the world."

That's what I mean by "old school." We're on the same page ;-)

And I wouldnt DARE rock the double lacostes, or popped collars.

lacoste? $72 for a plain golf shirt? that's a joke.

Yessir, I'll stick to my rip-off brands, free t-shirts, and thrift shop clothing.

^ebay, 25$ a shirt :)
