Penn State DISCUSSION THREAD Fall 2022 Admission

Yes. As I may have mentioned this happened to us. Counselor submitted recommendations on 11/2. We confirmed with our local admissions rep that this meant DS was considered not EA. That being said, he just received an acceptance this week. I saw people posting here about acceptances and asked him to check his portal, and it was there. He checked Tuesday, so we’re not sure exactly when the acceptance arrived. He said he did not receive a separate email. And now we wait for the Schreyer Honors decision …

Penn State main campus gives very little money (merit or need-based), but the commonwealth campuses have been offering the Discover Penn State Award to some out of state students for the past couple of years.

Dang it, my daughter is not eligible :frowning:

  • Students must reside in: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia, as well as the District of Columbia (other out-of-state residents are not eligible for this award)

Prominent PSU family/philanthropists announced yesterday that they’ve given another huge gift tothe College of Liberal Arts. They are funding 10K 4-yr scholarships for 160 students, or at least that is the target. The actual dollar amount is not to be disclosed, but the article I read does say it puts the Chaikens in the #2 spot behind the Pegulas, who donated about $100 million. So, scholarships getting more attention, as they should.

How is the Provost scholarship decided? Is it merit based or more need based? Or neither

My son got it, too. I was also under the impression they give almost no merit $. Regardless, no acceptance to UP= not going.

The Provost Award is the same (or very similar) but without the state restriction.

Also curious the guidelines and how many people get it. My daughter got a message today saying she received the Provost Award. Didn’t think we would get anything. We are OOS so it’s will still be a hefty tuition bill plus 12k room and board.

Also I want to add that the Provost Award is for University Park Campus. Isn’t that the main campus? 4years at UP. Is that normal?

Would love anyone to chime in if they got the award, and what they know about it. How many can get it?

Many thanks.

Was your son accepted to Univ. Park?

Do you mind sharing acceptance date, program and stats?

I’m very jealous! My son hasn’t been offered any financial awards. We were really hoping for this award. It would make the college decision easier. We are also OOS. He was sent an email to apply for the sapphire program but I’m not really sure about the benefits of that.

It’s an amazing award. I am trying to learn more about it. We didn’t think they gave out any money especially for another midwest student.

Do I understand it correctly, that the Provost Award is avg. $6,000 a year (5k,5k,7,k,7k) for four years for OOS (and for IN state students)? That gets the OOS tuition down, but Penn State tuition plus room and board is 35K tuition+ 12K room and board = 47K. IN-state will be 25-30K including room and board.

I agree…she wants to go to Penn State so badly but currently would cost us $30,000 a year over student loans. We are hoping that almost all of her 60 credits transfer so perhaps she will only need two-ish years of undergrad.

Did you see the above message from @MYOS1634 ? Looks awesome if that is your son’s area of interest!

I did. He’ll probably apply for it. I just wish it had a financial value. I am really happy for you and everyone else who did get awards. It’s a huge accomplishment!

Congrats to your D for getting the Provost award.

I’m not sure I understand your question? Is the cost of OOS tuition something you weren’t aware of? Or are you disappointed that the Provost award is a smaller percentage of overall cost for OOS students than in-state students?

Regardless, it is merit and not many kids get it. Congrats!

I appreciate your response. I apologize if I come off as ungrateful. I think no matter what there is still some sticker shock that comes into play. I think my unclear question was if room and board was included, or if I misunderstood the terms for in-state versus out-of-state.

I don’t mean for my over-worrying to dampen out excitement! Not being from the area, I want to know more about Penn State. I am also from University town and know more about our university than ever needed to be known.

Thanks for your message and perspective.

Honestly, how much does your D want to stay in the Midwest vs. leave? Does she hope to end up on the East Coast (or somewhere else) at the end or a Midwesterner through and through?

If she gets the faculty/staff discount, is that a done deal and she stays in your college town? (I have a suspicion which town and it is a wonderful town - if it is the one I think, we lived there for 10 years…)

What is her intended major? How do majors compare at the various Universities?
Did she apply for Schreyer?

many different variables. feel free to DM me if you want to take this off-line -

good luck -

Has she had her transfer credits evaluated? You should be able to have that done, and know what will transfer. There’s an online site to look many of them up, but you can also have it done through admissions. Keep in mind though – there’s a difference between “has transfer value” and “can fulfill requirements”
