People from California

I'm looking into all these schools for film programs and english as well.

Basically, the school has gotta be near L.A for sake of contacts but I can't get into UCLA... USC is a stretch and Loyola Marymount (like USC) is too expensive.

Where else is there?

I heard UC Irvine has a film program but is it any good?

Thanks

UCSB, UCSC, SDSU, CSUN (Northridge) all have film programs. I don't know about Irvine.

If you are really adventurous, and really want to do film at a very reasonable price, why not try this: Cinema and Television [Los Angeles City College]

Without knowing your stats (but assuming that USC is reach) I'd think you might want to look into Pitzer or Chapman. Neither is UCLA cheap, but FA is probably available.

Sorry.

3.5 unweighted 4.06 weighted
top 33%

520 math 670 reading 710 writing on SAT's (first time taken and without preparation)

Cross Country and Track each season sportsmanship award x3

160 volunteer hours
Job each summer for past 7 years

and FA would be hard since i am middle class

Man! All these schools require SAT II subject tests!!! I haven't taken any of those???

edit: OK so I'm going to sign up for U.S. history and lit.

I'll send my scores to USC, UCSB, UCSC, and SDSU.

If cost is an issue, then you want a public school. There are two 4-year public university systems in California: the University of California system (more selective and more expensive, but still cheap compared to private schools), and the California State University system (less selective and even less expensive).

If you can't get into UCLA, then there are several CSU campuses in LA with respectable film schools, including CSU-Long Beach, CSU-Northridge, and CSU-Los Angeles. I'm surprised that you're not looking at these schools. These schools may not be highly ranked overall, but their film programs have stronger reputations than their other programs, and offer solid connections to the LA film industry.

Steven Spielberg went to CSULB. He left before graduating, but ultimately completed his BA degree many years later through extension studies. The story[/url</a>] is that he submitted "Schindler's List" to CSULB as his senior project (it was accepted) and "Jurassic Park" for a science requirement (credit was denied).

Wow thanks I had ideas about any of these schools but I disregarded them because of their average GPA and such but they are cost-friendly right?
Maybe I could earn merit-based scholarships. I mean... CSU-LA the 75th percentile of SAT scores is under 1000...

Are their English/creative writing programs at least OK though? That's important to me also.

Spielberg hardly learned his craft at CSULB. He got his diploma via extension classes to make his Dad happy (he was already well on his way after he had previously dropped out to direct) I mention this because I remember when it happened it made us chuckle to think that years later people would think that CSULB has a great program since Spielberg "graduated" form there. Chapman is a great program, but its getting more and more difficult to get in. They are generous with merit aid, but only if you have sterling stats.

Unless you can be recruited for track, USC is an large stretch given your gpa and test scores. The UCs are not OOS friendly, and will cost $40k+ per year, and finaid is not great.

Assuming you are from Maryland look at the film program at Towson State, <a href="http://www.towson.edu/emf/index.asp;%5B/url%5D">http://www.towson.edu/emf/index.asp;</a>. Also look at these east coast programs: Temple Temple University Film & Media Arts; Hunter FILM AND MEDIA DEPARTMENT...HUNTER COLLEGE; UNC-Greensboro, Department of Broadcasting and Cinema, UNCG; UNC-Wilmington, UNCW Film Studies | About Us; North Carolina School of the Arts, Filmmaking | Home Page; and, University of South Carolina, USC: Film Studies.

You need to be realistic given your SAT scores. Of course if you can get them up significantly, who knows?

Thanks, yeah I'm definitely looking at UNC-W that looks like a strong program.

But based on English and film so far my list looks like:

Will take SAT II in October for:
UCSC
UCSB
UCSD

and...
Iowa
UNC-W
Tulsa
Syracuse
Pitt
Illinois

and just as a safety whose English program has a film concentration: Michigan State

Chapman has a very good film program, but it's pretty pricey. Apply to a bunch and see where you get some aid.
