Hey everyone
So this is my second year of college and second year of having to live in a dorm(sigh). I just hate living in dorms I wish I can commute and not have to live with a roommate and things being so far away like dining halls etc but thats beside the point I will explain the issue down below.
So because I’m a sophmore now I have to live in a different dorm since the old one was for freshman only. This new dorm is a bit nicer but the people in my hallway are so obnoxiously loud and annoying sometimes. They are always yelling and screaming during the evening. They never seem to stop arguing always constant fighting. At one point it almost got physical since they were banging on doors and throwing stuff. I actually thought about calling the university police but didn’t since I thought it may make things worse and Iam not really sure if its worth their time to break up fights. I’m not really sure where the RAs are since I haven’t seen one of them since move in day Isn’t it their job to keep everyone safe?
Also people started fighting today and they were trying to drag me into this by saying slap this person for me I just looked at them weird and said I don’t understand why you guys are fighting please stop but none of them listened and when I came back one of them yelled at me and told me to mind my own business meanwhile I wasn’t trying to get involved.
At this point I’m not sure what to do. I’m afraid if I get involved i too will be in a heated argument and fight because my temper can be very bad also. If I just don’t say anything someone may get hurt. Since the RAs arent there I’m thinking the next time this happens I call university police and have them deal with it. Since i feel like they are trained to handle the situation better than me.
Any tips? Thanks
Make an appointment with the housing office and explain what’s going on. At the very least they might be willing to have campus security do some extra patrols.
I would also start looking for off-campus housing. You don’t know what is out there unless you do some research. You may be able to find something at a comparable price, maybe even for the spring semester if you can find someone planning to study abroad.
You also had dorming issues last year, right?
You need to find your RAs. They aren’t hidden away or living in a different dorm. In most colleges, who they are and how they’re reached is public info. And a student raising an issue is expected to start with the RAs.
Before moving, see if you’re allowed to break any housing contract. And try to stay away from the troublemakers. Sorry, but I don’t ee how someone urges you to get involved, if you aren’t standing there.
You can study other places, too.
Avoid these people.
Find the RA and ask him/her if they have heard the fighting. That person lives there too right? Ask them if they have addressed it.
I’m sure you are in a housing contract for now but for the future if you don’t like dorms look for other options.
Next time there is fighting, call the campus police. If people are literally throwing punches and screaming and arguing (I have to wonder how this could be a regular occurrence) then that is a safety issue. Meanwhile, you need to speak to the RA immediately and tell him or her to please do something about these constant fights and shouting matches. If you get jot results after speaking to the RA, go to the housing office, explain that this issue is out of control despite repeated attempts on your part, and request to be moved.
Hey everyone (Update)
I apologize for replying so late things have been crazy as far as homework/tests and finals are coming up next week but I have some free time so I will talk about everything below
The dorm issues are pretty much still active unfortunately. This time now people are leaving trash in the hallways and in the bathrooms like on toilets wasting toilet paper spilling drinks on purpose etc. The RAs conducted a meeting to adress this issue about the hallways/bathrooms in hopes that this will stop but none of it did and they said if it continues then they will fine each and every person living in this building (including me). Meanwhile I have done NOTHING wrong or left any trash in the bathrooms in fact it makes me angry seeing trash all over the place. I would also like to mention that two people were fighting and one of them speared the other through a window in the hallway breaking the entire right window and cutting the other persons arm due to broken glass that was penetrated through his skin and that was when I had it. I went to go tell an RA that this is completely ridiculous that it has gotten to a point where people are BREAKING THINGS! and that they should do something about it. The RA agreed and basically wrote a damage report and called university police I gave the police my statement of the description of what happened how it happened and what the people looked like. I also told them where they can possibly find the people that did this. They thanked me and I guess the people got caught and I’m not sure what happened after that I guess they each have to pay a fine half and half for a new window. I don’t mean to be a snitch or rat them out but I just cannot help it if college students act like F***** 5 year olds and want to break things its one thing to argue but if they are going to start breaking things then thats vandalism which is a crime. I apologize for my bad language/cursing. If I see something that is just totally wrong I have to speak up because its not fair for people like myself to have to witness the fighting who knows maybe they will barge into my room and start breaking my things which I will be pissed if they do. I’m glad I did what I felt like needed to be done. I want everyone to live safely here since we are paying like $7,000 for dorm fees. I apologize again for my harsh language. I hope you guys can understand.
