Performance Opportunities for actors/Theater majors?

Any Theater majors out there; please give us a sense of your performance opportunities at Oxy... how many mainstage shows, student performing groups, availability to freshman.

Would also get opinions from current/past Theater majors on quality and intensity of the program.

Thanks!

Dec 4th Art interview day, for actors, playwrights and design. Interviews, tours and a play at Keck theater.

I’m going on Dec 4th.

Hello!

I’m an Oxy graduate, majored in Theater. The program really is fantastic. There is more available than you can take advantage of in my opinion - I would have loved to have taken an acting for the camera class or a writing class with Laural Meade but I ran out of time. I also wish I could have taken more classes in costuming and makeup, things like that. In terms of acting, Alan Freeman, John Bouchard and Laural Meade are all great. I loved John’s classes - he pushes you hard, but it’s absolutely worth it. In the fall there are not as many acting opportunities as in the spring. If I’m remembering correctly (which I might not be), there is pretty much just the two mainstages. In the spring there are almost too many opportunities - New Play Festival, Directing Class Midterms and Finals, and two mainstages. Additionally, there was a scene study group while I was there, I’m not sure if they are still going, you should ask about it. Sometimes people also direct their own plays (on a smaller scale) for their senior comprehensives, or do a cabaret of sorts, and they are looking to cast for those as well. And also, there is a very good film department at Oxy, and those students are always casting for their short films as well. You’ll find plenty of opportunity in theater at Occidental - not to mention you are in LA! I sometimes went on auditions just to get used to it before graduating. Some of my fellow students would book gigs outside of school and work those for awhile too.

And of course, there is the AMAZING study abroad program that goes to the London Dramatic Academy. I studied abroad there, and it was the most amazing experience of my life. I loved London, I loved the school, the instructors, everything. They really make you work, but if you take the challenge you come out of it a million times better. LDA improved my skills by an incredible amount. I can’t express how awesome that program is. Hope all this is helpful, let me know if you have any other questions!

ETA: Judging by your username, you are a musical theater lover (like me)! In terms of musical theater, Oxy is lacking. If it is still the same as when I was there (which was verrrry recently) they only do one musical every two years. I happened to be abroad for the second one, so I only got to do one while at Oxy. That was a serious disappointment for me, so you should know that going in. In retrospect, I’m still pretty sure I would have chosen Oxy (for theater, and for how amazing the rest of the school is!), but it is good to know ahead of time. =)
