Can anyone give information about your theater program?

Hi @bisouu!

I’m a current theater major at Oxy. Do you have any specific questions about the program? :)

Hi! My D wants to be in theater and is an actor. How are the courses? Are there many acting opportunities? Is it more history and theory? How many shows are there a year? Are you happy with the program? Thanks so much for responding :)

Hi!

I would say that Oxy’s program is very reflective of the fact that we’re a liberal arts school. All students are required to take a variety of classes within the major, ranging from Technical Theater to Acting to Design or History. Everyone I know really enjoys this, though-- you take classes that challenge your knowledge or is slightly beyond your comfort level, and learn to be a better student and person because of it!

There are four Mainstage productions every year (two in the fall and two in the spring), in addition to other opportunities to perform (Directing Finals, New Play Festival) and our improv troupe (Fantastiprov). So there are a lot of chances to perform! And freshman are welcomed and encouraged to audition for all events-- we even hold a General Audition practice at the beginning of each year so the professors can meet the new students prior to them auditioning :)

Also: if your D is interested in acting/movement, Oxy has a unique program called Summer Children’s Theater, in which current students work as professional, paid actors all summer long to recreate fairy tales from different cultures without any props, costumes, or sets. Pictures and additional info about that can be found at [Children’s Theater | Occidental College | The Liberal Arts College in Los Angeles](Children’s Theater).

I love the program! Every class I’ve taken has been fantastic, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with experts in the field both in and out of the classroom. The theater program here has a real sense of community and everyone really looks out for each other :)

I hope that helps!

Thanks so much for your reply! I have only heard wonderful things about Oxy’s theater department…My D has a 4.3 gpa and 1880 SAT’s…do you think she has a shot of getting in?

Also, do you know anyone who did the study abroad at LAMDA?
