Performing Arts Project?

AUDITIONS The Performing Arts Project

Anyone have experience with this program? It looks like another good summer option. I may have D audition -- they will be in Chicago the day before Unifieds begins. I find it interesting they are asking for those who audition to include something original. Not sure what D would do for that, but I guess we have time.

It is a fabulous program. My son got in last summer but didn’t go. But all the instructors came from the Broadway Theatre Project that he did attend the summer before. The instructors are wonderful, caring people. The master classes are wonderful. Great program.

I’ll bet it’s great but I’ll spend that $3500 on college instead :)

I had the incredible pleasure of being a company member at Performing Arts Project’s Summer Intensive this past July. The days were long, but amazing. It’s hard to put the experience into words, but I’ll try!

Each (14 hour) day was filled with fun, informative, and challenging classes. We started each day at 9 with a full company warm-up (taught by a different faculty member each day), and moved on to classes from there. We took dance classes (ballet, modern, jazz, tap, etc), acting classes (scene study, stage combat, viewpoints, audition prep, film/tv, etc.), singing classes (private voice lessons, audition prep, group voice classes), business classes (audition etiquette, finding rep, headshots/resumes, etc.), and awesome guest artist classes (Gavin Creel, Abigail Spencer, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Hunter Bell, Susan Blackwell, and many more came to teach us). Each class we took was safe, yet challenging. The teachers pushed us take risks with our art, but we all felt so safe to take those risks.

After classes, we would go into rehearsals for our different pieces that would showcase at the end of the project. Everyone ended up being in a bunch of different pieces and got to work with a bunch of different faculty members. It was super cool!

I think one of the most exciting parts of the program was the amount of collaboration between faculty and students. We all not only worked with each other, but off of each other. The students didn’t just learn from the faculty, the faculty also learned from the students. We all were in this mode of constant collaboration and willingness to work for our art. I’ve never been a part of a more close-knit group of artists before. Everyone had something to bring to the project, and we all got to share it and learn from it.

I am so proud to say that I am a member of TPAP’s Company One.

“I am enough!”

Thank you, kevinjames, for that program description.
As Walker1194 points out, all of these summer programs are expensive, and it is hard to know whether your student will benefit in a substantive way as a return on your investment. Cherubs, for example, is almost $5000 without the MT extension (which pushes it to almost $7000).
We could spend much less just doing individual coaching all summer. Just not sure what to do…

That is completely understandable, but, as a MT student myself, I know that I’m wouldn’t get as much out of just individual coachings all summer. As an artist, I learn from other artists’ work. I’m completely inspired by the work my peers do, not necessarily what an acting coach tells me to do.

Again, I understand that these programs are very expensive, but I raised all of the money to attend TPAP myself. It’s a lot of work, but it’s possible! And most definitely worth it.

I forgot to add in my description that TPAP also has different college programs come to teach and promote their program. :-)

Kevinjames, what is the demographic of the participants at PAP?
? primarily high school age, college age, etc.
? % male v. female
? is everyone experienced and fairly polished or are there some beginners.
? How much personal attention does one receive from the faculty.

Any additional info would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Did anyone attend this program this summer? Or do you know anyone who did? My son is really interested in it for next summer, but I’d like to hear more about it.

dcsparent, I know do-what-u love’s son attended this summer. I bet she would be more than happy to share his experience. Hoping she sees this!

gpmom48230 - normally I would, but I’m afraid that if I say anything that might come off as “promotional”, the moderator might delete not just my post, but the whole thread as she did last week (I would have appreciated a PM, email or even a public slap on the wrist with a wet noodle - but it just vanished)… People will stop sharing when they are treated this way… :/

That said, he loved every second!
It was worth every penny and then some.

A friend of my D attended and liked. My D went to The Broadway Theatre Project. Similar program. My D reports that it was “life changing”.

wrong place ;))

Hi! This information was very valuable, thank you. I’m currently a junior with 7-8 years experience with theater and dance, and I really want to be sure this program will be a challenge for me so that I grow artistically. I’d love it if you could talk about the level of the students attending. Also, is there sufficient training at the individual level so that this would help me auditioning for MT college programs next fall? How much of the time is focused on rehearsing for the showcase at the end? I’ve been to theatre camps which seemed to spend too much time preparing for the showcase and I’d like to avoid that.
Thanks so much!

@trader145 TPAP is auditioned based, and attracts a high caliber of student. There is no “formal” showcase at the end, just the ability for parents to observe rehearsals. I think I know what you mean about dedicating too much time to rehearsing the showcase, as the program my D attended the summer before TPAP - that was her chief complaint. I can’t speak to college auditon prep, as my D attended between her senior year of HS and freshman year of college and had already successfully navigated the audition process. But, maybe @MTmom2015 can speak more to that, as her S was a rising senior when he attended. I will say that my D recommends TPAP to everyone she knows.

This thread has a number of comments about TPAP:

There is definitely some emphasis on college auditions during your time there, but based on my D’s experience, they focus a lot on personal and artistic growth. I cannot say enough about what this experience did for my D’s confidence going into her college auditions. The talent level among students there is phenomenal, the industry contacts and friendships made will last a long time.

My D loved being a part of Company 3 so much that she sold her car to be a part of Company 4!

@Bogeyw - I’m sure our D’s know one another then - as my D was in Company 3!

Yes, kategrizz…I’m sure they do. I remember seeing your D in a very memorable duet performance during parent’s weekend. It was lovely!
