xx13xx, from what I have heard, I don't think things will change that much concerning admissions. Dorm space shouldn't be more limited because it's being repaired as we speak. I do know that Dr. Cowen has said - as jmmom said - that they will not lower admissions standards, but that they also do not expect to take a smaller freshman class in order to do so. In fact, as of last Friday, applications were up over 50% from this time last year. What does that mean? I don't know since I am not reading them and did not see the ones from last year. Some may think - or have been given the impression by counselors - that Tulane will have to lower standards and this will be their best shot at a top 50 school. (Bad advice.) Still others see that there is something special there that has returning students itching to get back. Whatever the reason, it's good news for Tulane.

What's good for you is that you got the personal application. I think it's very possible that you are "overthinking" this. Have faith in yourself!

I don't know about apps being up. I do know that a friend who volunteers at a private prep school in southern Ca in the counseling office said that at her school the interest in Tulane is way down. They traditionally send quite a few to Tulane each year.
I have also heard a some talk amongst some seniors in my town that they are taking all southern schools off their lists.
I think that for Ca people this has had an effect. But also note that many Ca kids tend to like to stay close to home. At least for right now. Memories can be short so all that could change by Dec.

Do the "priority applications" my daughter has been receiving from Tulane really mean anything?

My daughter has been getting those "priority application" emails from Tulane since August. She's had three emails from them in the last week encouraging her to apply. Yet, I wouldn't call Tulane a match for her stats - she's in the high end of their verbal scores, right at their median GPA, but below their 25th percentile for math.

But, the mailings have done what I suspect they are REALLY meant to do: get her to take a look at Tulane and consider doing that priority application because it's just so darned easy. I hate to be cynical, but if Tulane is sending out bunches of these things, there's a reason their applications are up 50%.

So, here's the question: Does Anyone have any REAL sense of whether the priority application is just a marketing gimmick or really means you have any sort of shot, even if your stats are low on the totem pole for Tulane?

I know some of you say your kids were accepted to Tulane using the priority application last year, but it sounds to me like they were, for the most part, perfectly qualified to be accepted there even without some "priority." Anyone have a story of a kid who had stats below Tulane's mid point actually getting in this way?

In short, just how much "priority" and "personal attention" should you really expect if you're on Tulane's mailing list for this?

TKnows, the personal app is not a binding early response, if that's what you are referring to.

carolyn, I too do not know the answer to your question. However, don't let that stop me from responding . Tulane has repeated in many venues that they will not relax their admission standards. However, it seems to me that your D's more than adequate verbal, her GPA and her "low" stat only in a field she doesn't intend to pursue (math) would put her in good stead.

My S is, as you said, one of the kids who was on the high end of Tulane stats and did receive substantial merit, but he never received the Personal App.

A friend in Los Angeles called and said her D who has no AP or honors courses and a SAT that the verbal and Math barely break 1000 received a priority app. Her D's target schools are Cal States and the Arizona schools. They do live in a high price zip code so maybe that theory is at work. They will not apply since she would not get in and if by some chance she did she couldn't handle the work.
Carolyn what I did see last year with the few kids from our town who applied to Tulane was that the earlier they applied the more likely they were to get in. Strangely though many who had great stats I know of none who were granted any merit aid. My D was the first at her school in years that actually decided to attend maybe the lack of final acceptance has made Tulane reluctance to hand any merit aid this way. Or maybe it is the zipcode coming into play.
I do know of a couple of students who received the priority app in the summer who are top students and SAT scorers. One who had not considered Tulane at all thought about applying so it does work.

Thanks Mom60. My daughter is getting a lot of "priority application" offers these days, so I suspect you are right and it has more to do with the school she attends (private) and our zip code than her test scores. : )
