So Im working on my personal statement to transfer to UW-seattle. I just want to hear some feedback and advice from either current students or prospective students also applying on how they decided to format their statement. I know theres an outline of sort on topics that are suggested to be addressed. So are/did many of you kind of follow those guidelines in your essay trying to cover most of them, or did you do something a bit more out of the box, like a creative story that shows your characteristics and what not. Also any broad or specific advice on the statement in general is very welcome, thanks!

I focused on cultural awareness, and wrote about how my life experiences shaped my perspective on culture and cultural differences.

The important thing to remember is quality. What you write is very important, but so is your manner of expression. It’s important to write in a sophisticated yet clear manner.

I would advise against writing a ‘creative story’ where your thesis is expressed in an allegorical way, because this can cause a degree of separation between what you actually mean, and what the reader interprets. UW Admissions are reading literally thousands of personal statements, so they don’t have time to wonder whether you meant A or B.

I just got in as a transfer and in my personal statement I focused on my past experiences and why they’ve brought me to where I am now. I also talk a lot about the things I’ve gotten out of going to my current school and why I feel it’s time for me to move on to the UW, why UW is the best fit for me, etc.

Definitely be clear about what you want and why UW is where you’ll get it. I would agree that a creative story isn’t the best idea for this, seeing as they’re really trying to get a sense of how you’ll fit into the study body at their school and whether you’ll be successful there. I would say just be clear and to the point.
