I just wanted to confirm for all you guys out there that some Stanford Admits are once again receiving personalized notes.

I was always planning on attending Stanford and I knew my regional admissions officer was nice but the two things I got were really special to me.

First, about a week after decisions was my birthday, so my regional officer sent a birthday card. then today i got the generic regional officer letter with a special personalized note at the bottom.

apparently lots of people get them each year but its still really cool to get it.

I also got it… But I’m not sure how seriously to take it. It seems a tad hyperbolic. Like, she called my essays “the most interesting read of the year.” I’m flattered, of course, but I can’t help wondering if everyone else’s said similar things. I wasn’t very happy with my essays, personally. :P

Jealous! That sounds ultra-cool. Congrats you guys.

I don’t know if any of you would know, but… Do any of you know if any other big-name-ish schools send out little notes like those post-acceptance? I doubt many do, but I guess I’ll find out in April, haha.

I haven’t heard of any other university that does this; I think since stanford has EA rather than ED, this is mainly to solicit us into coming to Stanford by showering us with all this attention; not that I needed convincing :)

My admit officer cited some detail which I believe originated in my “Why Stanford” essay. I must say, I’m impressed at all these details that the admissions office is attending to, from the phone calls to these small personalized notes.

:( Guess who wishes they could be you right now?

It’d be nice if they could tell us rejectees what we did wrong. Sounds awesome though. Their convincing tactics are clearly working. What a smart admissions committee. Even though they did reject me :)

I actually think other schools do sent out personalized notes too. Not sure which ones, but I mentioned it to my friend, who told me other colleges have done the same for students at her school.

I only know for EAers, but UChicago sent out personalized happy holidays cards and Georgetown sent out personalized Merry Christmas cards. Both of them have current students call EA accepted students with congrats and “do you have any questions?” MIT sent cards that were hand signed by all the admissions staff but not personalized, but I got a personal email from them after I got in and I’ve heard on the blogs of them contacting other people like this.
Swarthmore sent me a letter after I interviewed, from a senior who works in the admissions office, with a story she thought I might be interested in, which I was. But that’s sort of different.

I believe the University of Cambridge lets you call or write and they’ll actually tell you why you were rejected, not just say “there weren’t enough spaces, sorry.” I think they’re amazing for that :).

I just recently got the letter from my regional officer; he wrote a short note telling me how he enjoyed reading about my passion for music and that he hopes I will bring it to Stanford. I think it’s so cool how they personalize each letter and share a few of their thoughts on our application/acceptance! :D

pewpewpew: Judging from the the responses in the Facebook thread, it seems that they were being genuine. You’re the only other person I’ve seen with a similar note (most refer to things they’re interested in, rather than essays), and, since we have different officers, they don’t conflict. And, having re-read my own essays, I can say with some certainty that, though they aren’t my best work, they are very, very interesting. In an insane way. :P
