@nostalgicwisdom how do you find such data?
To everyone who was accepted, congratulations!! I never did the fall weekend, but the spring weekend at Pomona was where I met some of my closest friends (I’m a first year at Pomona now). I know a lot of people at Pomona who met their best friends, roommates, etc at the fall weekend, as well as got to know a lot of people from other grade levels. Get excited!!! Pomona is an amazing place and we’re all excited to meet the prospies.
If you have any questions about the program, Pomona in general, etc, feel free to message me! My biggest advice is to take full advantage of the program, talk to current students (like me), talk to other prospies, and explore the school as much as possible. See you then!
@ramennoobles Was the spring program for Questbridge and Posse students? Those are other feeder programs.
@preppedparent No, it was for all admitted students who were first gen, low income, or a minority.
I think that mostly encompasses Questbridge and Posse admits (low income and first gen). My daughter who is a minority was not invited. Still, it sounds like a good thing.
The POP and other college fly-in programs are for URM(under represented minorities), low income and first generation students. To my knowledge ORM (over represented minorities) are never eligible for the flyin programs like Pomona’s POP program. Most colleges also have diversity admit days/weekends in the Spring as well for diverse students, first generation or low income students.
Congrats to all that got invited. Pomona is an amazing school! For those that didn’t get invited ,remember that it doesn’t mean you can’t get into Pomona or other great schools.
^ "To my knowledge ORM (over represented minorities) are never eligible for the flyin programs like Pomona’s POP program. "
From reading around here these programs also target and accept ORMs each year…
@notigering not aware of this, but if it is so I am thinking this is not the majority of kids invited. flyin programs like POP are directly targeting URM, first generation students and low income students.
agree with @momof2eaglesfor the most part. So anyone who is a minority (whether over or under represented) are invited to apply to the fly-in programs. They do accept some Asians but only if they are first gen or low SES.
I was more interested in the Spring Program. When I looked at the flyer, they mention Questbridge and Posse students–so again its targeted for minorities who are low SES or first gen, not other Asians who are not in these groups.
I was just repeating what I’ve heard arround here. Basically that Asians are underrepresented in some LACs and that as such they are also targeted by these programs. Schools probably give preference to low SES or 1gen as a tiebreaker but it surely varies from place to place depending on their specific institutional priorities…
You can definitely be Asian and receive the opportunity to attend either program. But they do look into :
- Being mixed race with a URM background
- Being low income and/or first-gen
- Coming from a rural background
- Being an underrepresented Asian ethnic group, like Hmong, Laotian, or Cambodian
In any case, Pomona is conscious about the nuances of diversity and will holistically consider whether or not you’d be someone without traditional means to visit campus.
Thank you @nostalgicwisdom for clarifying. in most cases Asian is ORM , but yes there are URM Asian groups like Hmong, Laotian, or Cambodian that could help in getting into flyins and also give you an advantage in the college admission process.
ORMs traditionally do not get a "leg up " in the admission process/ or for diversity flyins and that includes Asian students(except for the categories mentioned).
There are many many threads on CC about ORM vrs URM and the college admission process. .
if y’all have any questions about POP weekend or pomona, i attended last year and now i’m at pomona! feel free to reach out
