What are my chances of getting accepted as a petroleum engineering major? I really want to do PetroE at TAMU but on the website it said the class size for PetroE was only 500 students.

I would say at best your chances are 50%. Anything engineering is really difficult esp. at TAMU. Since you are not in the top 10% that really hurts and your SATs could be higher but they aren't awful. Did you send both SAT and ACT? I understand your desire to go to TAMU, but I know Oklahoma State has an amazing Petroleum Engineering program with higher acceptance rates.
And there is always the chance you can be accepted and later switch into engineering.

my sat math and cr was a little higher, and I had a similar gpa and a few more extra curricular activities. I got accepted to the pete program 3 weeks ago. You should be fine. just tell them you're interested in joining the corps of cadets. it makes your chances skyrocket and you can back out of it once you get accepted. hope this helps

and ok state does not have a pete program. they have geological engineering. They offered me basically a full ride and that's the reason I didn't go there. you'll get into tamu don't worry

Oh, aggie2013, not good advice on the Corps of Cadets part. Not only is it dishonest to put that on your app just to increase your chances of getting in when you have no intention of staying, but the Corps recruiters investigate how serious you are about it before allowing it to be a factor in your admission.

Very true, indeed.

OP, you should be able to get in with those stats. Try applying early, perfecting your essays, and maybe even looking to get a letter of rec to increase your chances.

aggie2013, that is some very dishonest and horrible advice on the Corps of Cadets bit. I suggest you learn the Aggie Code of Honor before you get to Texas A&M. Honesty is in the utmost importance in anything one does especially apply to college. I am disgusted to hear that kind of advice. >.>

To get back on topic, c1rca, I had similar stats and got into Computer Engineering about a month ago. I think gstein's short but sweet post says it all as far as sealing the deal.
