I just got a phone call from the admissions office:

-"Hello...I'm calling from the CMU office of admissions, and I wanted to let you know that we're reviewing your application right now. We'll be mailing out letters between March 15th and April 1st."

Has anyone else gotten a call like this?...what does it mean?

[edit...just saw another thread with the same title. sorry!]

Hm...I got this same call about two days ago, it was a girl named Sarah who worked at CMU. She called me and told me pretty much the same thing....but the odd thing is..I applied ED and I got rejected to CIT. What is going on? Oo oO

If you got a call...you're in!!!!

sgiovinc1, you know that is not true..........

Why would you doubt what I have stated? I don't think they would devote the time to call someone and ask if they had any questions unless that student was in the seriously considered pile or even accepted pile. My D got the call and about a week letter received a letter of acceptance. Need to be a believer!

lol... "If one person got the call and they got in, everyone who gets a call MUST get in as well."

Not very good logic, imo.

i guess we're stuck doing this the old fashioned way then...waiting.

maybe in the future "rd decisions" list thread, we should note if we got a phone call?

My D did NOT receive a call last year, and still got in.

YAY! I was worried because I haven't gotten a call.

I'll be at CMU tommorow (official football visit), if I get a chance I'll ask someone about the phone calls... try and clear everything up.

I got the call tonight! w00t!

Well, i hate to be the bearer if bad news... i talked to one of the kids who makes the phone calls and he said that the main purpose was to let applicants know that their stuff has been recieved and to let them know where the process is. The call really isn't indicative of anything.

Lol, i'm actually typing this from CMU.

Does everyone get the phone call or is it a random thing? Funny, I thought I knew CMU but never heard about these phone calls. But then it has been a few years.

Seems random. I mean I didn't get one, and i was admitted (as i said they tell athletes a bit early). Who knows, ill pose that question next time.

That is sorta weird....I know a couple people who applied who haven't gotten phone calls either.

I got an email which said the same thing...

akash, what were the contents of that e-mail?

I can't imagine this call meaning anything. My daughter got such a call last night from a current student asking if she had any questions. But she also got such a call a long while back when she was not home as well. It seemed to me to be where they have current students try to talk to applicants to answer questions. We read NOTHING into it at all. I really don't think it meant any more than the fact that she was an applicant and they do outreach. I highly doubt it was an indicator of admissions. THAT kind of call would make more sense after the acceptances went out and they wanted current students to "persuade" students to attend CMU amongst their various acceptances. In my D's case, I am sure the call meant nothing in terms of admissions. She JUST auditioned at CMU this past Sunday and last night was only 48 hours later and I am sure admissions decisions in her case were not even made yet. The theater department would have to have decided on which ten kids to accept (yes, that is how many they take) and then submitted those names to the admissions office for them to make the final decisions. That ain't gonna happen in that amount of time. I did not see this call she got last night as any different than the one a few months ago by a current CMU student. In fact, my D barely spoke to her as she did not seem to have many questions since we JUST returned from campus.

Like I mentioned earlier, the calls aren't indicative of anything.

KirbusPrime: Sorry I don't agree with you! I don't think CMU would waste the time, money or effort to randomly make calls to kids to let them know where they are in the application process. I found it most interesting that calls are from females at CMU to female applicants to CMU. Not everyone gets a call because they have overwhelming numbers of MALE hacker types who want to go there!! It's the female of the sexes that they are trying to lure!!!! Don't kid yourself...they are aware of their male to female ratio and are trying very hard to overcome the imbalance. Just like if you are a minority...other than East Indian and Asian...they have plenty of those types who apply. But a real Southern African American!!!!! WOWEE! My D made good friends with a Southern Black guy...only 16 yrs old and fresh out of 11th grade HS.....from down the DEEP south and he is in the arts and design program. My D says he is very talented by VERy immature..having a rough time being so very young. But he was a find...they grabbed him and gave him all kinds of incentives to go there....I'm sure he got a call as well. I will find out from my D. She'll ask.
