My son received an odd phone call the other night from a girl who introduced herself as a Carnegie Mellon student and asked him whether he had any questions about CM. We haven't received a decision from CM, and my son was at a loss to come up with intelligent questions on the spur of the moment. What was this call about? Was it the phone call version of the UVa letter we received saying, you great, we really like you, we can't send out admission letters until 4/1 but when you start getting decisions from other schools, please keep us in mind?

I think it's not as much as you think ... I understand that students are asked to do this for applicants. I don't think there's a call list based only on who they're likely going to admit.

With that said, best of luck to your son!

My son got such a call a couple of months ago (January?) - they call it "making student connections". You may see it on the list of things on the CMU application status website as MSC #1 (or #2 whatever). I don't think it necessarily correlates to a positive sign (but we can hope so!). They have student volunteers call the prospective students. He got his phone call shortly after the "application complete" notation appeared on his status list. It is my understanding that some other student volunteers call accepted students on or after April 1st. There are some CMU applicants who've been getting calls this week in which they've been told they're accepted, but apparently it's because they are being invited to diversity weekend.

Oh, well! I guess the timing of the call made it tantalizing. She certainly did not say DS was accepted. I'm trying not to get my hopes up. It's supposedly an Irish thing - if you think the worst is going to happen, it's a pleasant surprise when it doesn't.
