Anyone else get this call that applied RD?

interesting. what was the phone call about?

it was much like the CMU call...she was like i just wanted to let you know that your application has been completed and that we hope ur senior year is going well..have u visited the school yet and then she was like well you will be hearing from us on april 1st. it was wierd...i was alittle mad cuz she woke me up from my nap lol.

I didn't get a phone call from JMU, but that's probably because I live overseas. I'm assuming it doesn't mean much; probably everyone in the states, or at least in VA, received a similar phone call. If it means anything though, it's definitely a favorable thing! 3 weeks to go! Good luck!

Logitech, is JMU one of your top picks? What about you, halfwayinthebox?

not really...my top 4 schools not in any order are Johns Hopkins, UVA, Carnegie Mellon, then Virginia Tech...JMU and others are more of safties

Hey if you don't mind could you post your stats (SAT, GPA). No pressure though.

3.51w 1310 sat (720 math 590 english) 7 AP Classes...4 junior year 3 senior year...hardest course load in my grade...ummm decent ec. but yea thats pretty much it.

My daughter got the phone call, too but she's not RD; she was accepted EA into the art dept.

Stats not as high as some others. SATs 1200. GPA 94. Top 10% of class. Lots of honors classes and a couple APs (honors math through Calc, 4 years of Spanish). Lots of ECs: HS bball and swimming, 9 yrs of dance, lots of volunteering and a bunch of clubs f(all 4 yrs). Typical academic stuff; NHS, Spanish NHS, GT program. Part-time work as artist and dancer.

Was at JMU recently for an open house for accepted students and kids were in tee shirts and flip flops. Big difference from northwestern NJ. Still waiting for the snow to go away so we can get our soccer fields back. Drove home that night to 7 inches of snow (2nd snowstorm that week). Kids had yet another early dismissal today. Winds are howling here.

I consider JMU a reach. Here are my stats:

Male, in-state (however, currently living overseas)
Cumulative GPA: 3.01 (1st semester, senior year: 4.16)
SAT: 1270 (630V, 640M)
9th-11th: attended well-regarded, international (private) school
12th grade: DoDDs school
AP Stats (3), AP Government/Poltics
Weak ECs, Nice Counselor Rec f/ old school, Completed Optional Essay

Actually, now I almost consider the school an almost impossible reach, because I recently found out they require 4 years of science! What's up with that?! Not even UVA & CWM require this much (they only RECOMMEND 4 years). I don't even plan on majoring in something science-related...

halfwayinthebox,
My daughter was accepted with just 3 years of science. JMU told us it was essential to take Bio, Chem and Physics with labs. It's ok to have other classes (like earth science, astronomy, geology) but not at the expense of the 3 essential lab sciences. Since many kids start with earth science or want to take AP classes their senior year, they say 4 yrs. We were told my daughter's courses were ok (and obviously it was since she was accepted). Someone said their son was taking AP Bio senior year instead of Physics since he wanted to major in Bio. The admissions person said it might hurt him. It's better to take Physics, then if possible, go beyond that with AP classes.

JMU stressed that it was important to take the most challenging courses available and to do well. I guess they consider course selection and GPA important indicators of success. High SAT scores help too, at least for their honors pgm and scholarships. The other 3 people we know (2 from VA) have much higher SATs (1300s). The adcom said to write the essay (even though they say it's optional). ECs and recs didn't seem to be that important.

Good luck.

jerzgrlmom:
I also only took 3 years of science: Conceptual Physics (9th), Biology (10th), Chemistry (11th). If the minimal requirement for a science class to be deemed a "lab" class is for the students in that course to complete labs, then I should be okay. Hopefully JMU won't be thrown off by the "Conceptual" in Conceptual Physics. Yes, the class was an introductory course, but we did complete labs. So I've met the science requirements then, correct? But even if I am okay in that regard, my grades in some of those were so-so to flat out bad. That'll probably have more weight than any questioning over whether or not I've taken the minimum lab courses required...thanks for the info!

yea im not sure if i want to go to JMU, im more math and science oriented and im looking more at UVA, TECH, and CMU right now...but who knows where ill end up i already got into RIT and VCU...just have to wait for those three and Johns Hopkins, mary wash and JMU...hah but im definately liking the 3:2 girl to guy ratio :)

Actually, I was accepted and only took Environmental (freshman science), Honors Biology, and Honors Chemistry. I opted out of Physics and AP Bio because I'm not interested in science. Also, only the Chem and Bio were labs.

Logitech101- I plan to go to Vtech, and I'm really excited. But good luck at your other schools.. (and vtechs 3-2 guy girl ratio is just as nice, from the other perspective). :)

I'm waiting for my finaid package to come.. to compare with other schools. I have 5 in my hand to compare.. and JMU is def. on my top list. I'm still waiting for JHU/UVA.. and other schools tho (I'm getting rejected from all of them lol)

Good luck to all of you.. and JMU is a FINE school in my opinion.. altho too rural for me tho.
