Physics lab?

My son is slotted to take Physics 105 next semester. He’s a mech eng major. We were looking through the Spring schedule and did not see any lab sections listed. Is there no separate lab period for Physics 105, or have they just not added them in yet?

I was wondering a similar thing about a different class Montegut. I wonder if they upload the bulk of the classes now, and then add others piecemeal before the registration date arrives. Kind of like how new honors classes kept popping up during the Spring.

Well for PH 105 and 106, the lab and lecture is integrated into a single class called studio physics. That’s why the scheduling is so unusual – two-hour lectures twice a week and a one-hour recitation once a week.

[Studio Physics at UA](http://bama.ua.edu/~stjones/studio/)

Thanks so much for the link, feenotype! That explains the unusual schedule, too. I’ll look at in more detail when I have time, but the introductory text does explain the lecture/lab combo and why we don’t have separate lab listings in the class schedule.

I wonder if anybody on CC has done physics 105 this semester, especially the kids with all those AP math credits. It seems if one has credit for Calc I through AP, they could have taken this class straight off the bat in the fall. Am I right?

I also want to be sure that one doesn’t have to take Chemistry before Physics 105. It’s not listed as a prereq, but would like to hear input from those who have taken the course. Son was not able to schedule chem in this fall, and may or may not be taking chem concurrently with physics.

Nope, once you cover the SI units, the two courses teaches different material. There is overlap in some topics such as thermodynamics.

Not to sidetrack this, but since I’ve got your ear, feenotype, does one really only have to take one semester of chemistry for mechanical engineering? Son is CBH, and I think that’s considered a minor, and others can chime in on this, too, please, but I don’t want him to be surprised in a couple of years to find out that he needs to take another semester of chemistry as a prereq. If he does, it would certainly be better to take the two semesters of chem back to back, or in one summer over two summer sessions.

Sorry not to PM this question, feenotype, but others on the forum might be interested, so I wanted to ask it “in public”.

CBHP is a minor, Montegut. Have your son double check the chem requirements with an adviser. Or perhaps, your son may want to take two semesters of chem, especially if he is interested in another minor or double major. For example, if he double majors in bio, he needs the two semesters of chem.

For the ME major itself, yes, CH 101 is the only required chemistry course.
