hey this is more for mtholyeoke2010, other current students, or alumni.
i was checking out some of the residence halls on the holyoke website. the ones that caught my eye were torrey, wilder, and prospect. i like all of them because they have more people than most of the other dorms and i sorta like a bigger community around me. i was a sucker for wilder cuz it seemed to have pretty big rooms and it has one of the only full kitchens. torrey i liked because it looked like it had bigger rooms and it's close to one of the sports centers. and i liked prospect because it has lots of students, and has floor lounges unlike torrey and wilder.

i was just wondering if any of you know if know which one of them is the best or if there are any other good ones that i missed. and it seems petty but are there tvs in the halls or do we have to bring our own? i'm so clueless.

I lived in Prospect my first year. The room was awful, but I made a lot of friends there. By the way, there aren't any floor lounges there anymore, which sucked for me since my room was the converted lounge. It's a good dorm for meeting other first years, but older students don't want to live there because the rooms are small and the walls are thin.

By the way, why are you asking? Just so you know, if you're a first year and you write down which dorm you'd rather live in, it doesn't mean anything. They put people in dorms based on which classes you preregister for, especially the first year seminar that you pick.

I'm probably not the person to ask about which dorm is the nicest, since I've never lived in any of the "best" dorms. The thing about Mount Holyoke is, you can get really lucky and get a room somewhere like Wilder, with lots of square feet, huge closets, hardwood floors, new bathrooms, etc. Or you could end up living in the basement of Brigham where the hallways aren't even heated, noisy pipes keep you up all night, the bathrooms are old and decrept, and instead of a closet you keep your clothes a wardrobe that has to be kept in the hallway because there isn't space for it in your room. It's all a matter of luck, and if you get screwed one year, you're just as likely to get screwed the next.

(Yes, I'm kind of bitter about the housing process here.)

PS: There is one common TV for each dorm, and you can sign up to reserve it. I have my own TV but I only use it for video games.

I would be satisfied by any dorm, i don't think it's that big of deal,
I can be happy with what ever i have, i don't think complainning here is something good to do

Haha, sorry. I really love Mount Holyoke, but many of my friends and I have had terrible experiences dealing with Residential Life this year. I think things will be a lot better once the new dorm is finished; then the other dorms will be less crowded, and they can fix up some of the rooms that are in bad shape.

oh ok thanks a bunch... again i'm clueless so i had no idea that i don't really have a choice on housing... but thanks a bunch i appreciate an honest response. maybe i'll just bring my own tv, just seems like a bit of a hassle... what a silly thing to obsess over. really shows where my priorities are lol

it's so isolated that there's hardly any crime from what i've heard... all of the students talked about how they could leave things around without worrying about them getting stolen... think we're very safe :)

Thats true, there is not much crime on campus. However, first year dorms in general are pertty horrible. The rooms are very small ( converted doubles from a single) and usually have only one closet and a bulky amor that takes up way to much space. Hopefully you will like your roommate because if not, living conditions can be hell.

First-year dorm assignments are basically random. You can put your top choice down on the housing form during the summer, but whether or not you'll get it is pretty much complete chance.

While it's true that first-years usually get some of the smaller rooms, ones that upperclasswomen didn't want during room choosing, they're not all that bad. I live in what some people consider a kind of crappy dorm, but I actually love my room, it's all in how you decorate it and make it feel like home. I wouldn't mind living here next year, except that I want to try something different. All the dorms have advantages, whether it's slightly nicer rooms or bigger windows or proximity to certain buildings or a dining hall in the dorm.

Of course, your roommate can have a huge impact on your feelings about your room, but you don't really have a choice there, so you just have to try and work things out.

If you want a good dorm, choose either Mead or Wilder. Wilder smells, but it's really nice. Mead is super-great. The Rockies are old and dirty; Safford and Porter are replicas of one another... Brigham is... Brigham.

I was just visiting MHC, and stayed with a good friend in Brigham. REALLY COOL old building, well-heated, only problem was that you would have to compromise on showers: if anyone else on your floor was taking a shower or flushing the toilet, you're likely to lose pressure and heat within the first 30 seconds...Aforementioned friend originally had a room in Ham-McGregor, which was kind of the opposite: cell-like rooms with AWESOME showers. Also a student parking lot about 100 yards from it, and it has its own dining hall. If you are a horseback rider, the Equestrian Center is literally next door to Ham-McGregor. Personally, although H-M was closer to the barn and a little more state-of-the-art, I'm a sucker for cool architecture. I've heard that Safford and Wilder are great, too. Good luck!
