I had Pires (or Deb, as she likes to be called,) for half of LS3. I did enjoy her class. She seemed to really care about getting students involved during lectures. She'd put a question on the board and then have us talk in small groups to come up with the answers. Also, exams weren't impossible. She did tell us that she wasn't going to curve grades but, I believe in the end, our final grades were curved.

I had her for LS3. She is great, very knowledgable and intresting personality!
she also likes to get students involved during the lecture. I liked her teaching style. she is also very friendly and helpful during office hours. exams are also fair.

Pires is an interactive lecturer- you'll have to show up to class due to the clicker or risk a serious grade drop at the end (attendance is taken... I know, lame). I had Gary Shin as my T.A., really awesome knowledgeable guy (taught the LS1 course in the summer). In any case, if you remember your stuff from AP Bio, the first midterm should be relatively easy. If not, I suggest you study your butt off and score really well on the first midterm because it gets tougher from there. There is quite a bit of knowledge you need to compress, but the first midterm is where you can really get ahead. (Cell biology I believe and some pathways). The class involves a whole ton of reading and a lot understanding of key processes like photosynthesis and such. 2nd midterm and Final are pretty tough, make sure you read and really write out decent study guides for both midterms (as you'll use them for the Final). I spent waaay too much time trying to memorize and know all the hormones and where they were released/synthesized etc. She's definitely the most interesting and active lecturer I had, the ones I've had for LS3/4 were pretty dull and dry. For the most part, the exams are going to be fair & tough. Attendance is a must. You're going to have to work hard, and I kind of had a small bias against the class since I felt I had covered so much of it in AP Bio. Also, there are online quizzes weekly that you need to remember not to miss (in addition to in lab quizzes).
