Pitt Application Essay

I am applying to Pitt this year to be admitted as a freshman in 2015. I am confused about the optional essay portion of the application. Most people have been telling me that it is just a personal essay on any topic I want to write about. But, on the website and on the application is says:

In lieu of an essay or personal statement, we ask interested applicants to answer a series of short answer questions. Answering the following questions is optional, but strongly encouraged. Your answers may increase the likelihood that you are considered for scholarships, guaranteed admission to graduate or professional school, or special consideration due to extenuating circumstances. If you decide to submit short answers, please answer all the questions:
Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
In 140 characters or less, describe why Pitt is a good choice for you.
In 7,000 characters or less, describe a situation where things were working against you. What did you handle well and what would you change if you had to do it over?

which one do I do? I have heard nobody talk about or complete those three questions that they have listed there.

My daughter did all of them. The two short 140 character questions and the 7,000 character essay.

My son did all three also. Do them or not, but you need to do what the website says not what other people tell you.

My daughter also did the essay and short answer questions.

Pitt requires that you either answer all of the questions or none of the questions. They do not want the writing supplement if it is only half finished.

S did them all, as specified. Who are these “most people?”
