Placement Examination

I understand that there are two placement exams at SBU: writing and math.

I took AP English Composition last year and this year I will be taking AP English Literature. I believe this fulfills my requirement for the writing placement exam.

I remember reading online that you must take the math exam before your scheduled orientation; however, I also read that incoming freshman for the 08/09 year are unable to register at this point. When will registration start and how often are the exams given?

you take the exams online. if you want to take them in a classroom i think you have to call the school. you can take the maths at anytime [at least a week or two before your scheduled orientation] and i think the english is given weekly [you have a few days to read an article and prepare your essay before submitting it]. if you took ap eng and you think youre going to get a good grade on the ap then you dont have to take the placement exam.

also, you register for classes during orientation.

Just wanted to pipe in and say that taking the online math placement exam doesn't really count anymore. You have to take it in a proctored environment. You can have the option to take it online and then you can schedule classes, but then you have to score the same score in a proctored session to stay in your same classes. I believe the reason is because they don't want you using a calculator.

May 1st, is when you are allowed to register for the exams.

are they exams timed or no??

They're timed but they give you plenty of time to complete each section.

I suggest taking it at SBU Manhattan b/c it is a paper exam. Otherwise, the exam is on computer at the main campus. Also if you do take it at SBU Manhattan, give it a few wks before your orientation because it takes a few wks for you to get your score. Took me like 2 wks last yr.
