Placement Testing (placing out)

hey guys, i read on the rutgers website that if you have above a 600 on the verbal SAT section, or a 4/5 on either AP english test you place out of english.

also, it says if you have a 4/5 on AP calc, you place out of math..

i have above a 600 on the verbal, and a 4 on AP calc from last year (09-10). when i try to register for placement testing, it only gives me the option of placing out of the english test because of my SAT score. how do i also place out of the math exam?

do i have to send my AP score reports to the university or something?

help is greatly appreciated :)

Yes, send your ap score report from last year to Rutgers IMMEDIATELY. Look on your score report for the phone number to call to have it sent (you can’t do it online). If you don’t still have your ap booklet, the Rutgers school code is 2765. You can call any time of day or night and it costs $15. so have a credit card ready when you call.

My son had the same problem and thought there would be an opt out screen for the math test just like the english/writing test. He needed to register for the foreign language exam and it appeared that it opted you in for math if you proceeded so he logged out instead. He is in the School of Arts & Sciences (SAS) so it might be different from school to school. After a few emails, he was told he didn’t need to reserve the foreign language exam but to contact the SAS First Year Students office and ask where/when the language exam would be on the day he wanted to come. Here is the email for the first students office: frosh@sas.rutgers.edu if you need to take a foreign language exam. My son received a reply right away from one of the Deans with the test info and took his exam this past Saturday.

Bottom line is, for SAS, at least, you don’t need to do anything (EXCEPT GET YOUR AP SCORE REPORT TO RUTGERS!!) unless you need to place in a foreign language and then you just show up after confirming a time/place.

If you are not in SAS, I would call your school and verify with them as to how you should handle this.

GOOD LUCK!

I am almost certain that everyone has to take the mathematics placement test and that you cannot be exempt from it.

For SAS this is addressed at the following link: [Placement Testing - SAS Office of Academic Services](<a href=“Error Page”>Error Page)

“If you completed the AP exam in English Lang/Comp, English Lit/Comp, or Calculus AB or BC with a score of 4 or 5 in your junior year, you do not have to complete the placement test in that subject, but must ensure that the AP scores are sent to Rutgers.”

There are no SAT or ACT exemptions for the math placement test and you are exempt with an AP score of 4 or 5 only if the ap exam was taken in the JUNIOR YEAR.

I noticed that SEBS has this same language on its placement page but I don’t know about other schools- you would need to check.

yeah, im enrolled in the business school, so it might be different. i talked with one of the deans when i visited there for an honors program open house thing last week, and he made it sound like the business school has the same procedures. I will call to make sure however, because if i can get out of testing, that would be great.

thanks for the prompt reply!
