In light of the prospect of having to take Math, Writing, and chem tests for UMich, what are you guys doing to prep for this test? And specific topics in calculus and chemistry? Any pointer is appreciated
The Math placement exam is pretty easy. It would be just like SAT2 Math2 level. No calculus required.
I’m not an incoming freshman so maybe my opinion doesn’t matter, but I wouldn’t recommend doing any sort of special prep work for the placement tests. It’s not worth it. If you’re knowledgable about math or chem to get placed into the higher level classes, you will be, regardless of whether or not you spent time before orientation or whatever “prepping” for them. Also the writing “test” is just an essay, if I do recall correctly. There’s not much prep work you can do for that.
When are the placement tests?
They are online except for the chem one and you have to complete 5 days before your orientation (at a minimum). The writing one says to allow many hours and 1200-1500 words long. You also have to take a language exam if you have any foreign language in high school. That’s done before orientation as well. Chem exam is during orientation.
Before orientation is online then? I took French in high school during 9th and 10th grade but I forgot most of it…
Yes, before orientation is online. It’s okay if you forgot most of French. They’ll just place you in first semester of whatever language you want to study. I got the links in my orientation confirmation email. Have you signed up for orientation yet? I should say I’m in Spanish so I don’t know if it’s the same for French
Has anyone at the school told you to prep for them?
Hi. I just paid deposit Friday so I think I will be receiving emails soon. If I know a second language that is not French better, can I take that test instead?
I’ve heard no prep. Math is all precalc to decide which Math class. The options are as UM explained it to me a data and charts class, calc 1 (115) or possible something higher. The vast majority take calc one if they need math (aiming for Ross, all sciences, engineering etc)
The math placement exam would not place you anything higher than Calc 1 even if you get 100% correct. You need AP Calc AB/BC or other college level credits to go beyond Calc 1.
For foreign language, you can pick the language you are planning to take. However, a good placement score would get you some credits directly. My D got 4 credits from AP Spanish with 5 and 4 credits from the Spanish placement exam.
Can anyone give me some idea on this: If a student took three years of (immersion) Spanish in HS, how many of the “four terms” of college level for that language would they be able/likely to test out of on that language placement test?
Is there a Chinese placement test? And on the test, is there going to be writing on it?
Not sure what the immersion reference actually means but my son and daughter each had AP Spanish…didn’t take the tests…and placed into the third of four classes…and the fourth class…
Is AP Spanish like a fourth year? My son’s school doesn’t have AP so not familiar with that. Immersion is where nothing but the language is spoken.
Kids had 4 years of Spanish…yes…and the AP year was immersive…
@jazzshreddermom I just got done with orientation and tested into the 3rd semester of Spanish. I only had 3 years in high school (No AP Spanish). Maybe w AP Spanish someone might test into 4th sem or maybe all the way out? Idk
