Any recommendations on places to stay while visiting USMMA? We have stayed at the Andrew but I am looking for alternatives out of the Great Neck area but still close to the academy.

Inn at Great Neck: Expensive, nice hotel, close to academy, ask for room on street side to avoid train noise.

Long Island Marriott in Garden City: Nice hotel away from Great Neck, not too far, but can be bad traffic if leave at wrong time, close to very nice mall.

The Residence Inn at Newark Airport...very nice...they have govt rates too. Traffic can be bad if you leave at wrong time (but that's true of all hotels in NYC area).

We stayed at the Marriott in Uniondale which is about 20 minutes away. It is a very nice hotel and after taxes is about 190 a night for a room with two double beds.

Red Roof Inn in Westbury; 20 minutes, great hwy access w mall and Target around the corner. About $150 a night incl tax. During the summer Glen Cove Mansion is $99 a night - about 30 minutes out.

OK folks, our new favorite hotel we tried this last time was a brand new Courtyard by Marriott. Not exactly close, it is right next to Republic Airport in Farmingdale. Takes 30 minutes to get to KP. But oh what a difference from The Andrew. Brand new restaurants next door, lots of stuff to do nearby and quiet since the airport is a private airfield. Room rate was $169.00 per night.

The Garden City Hotel is I believe the top rated hotel in the area and they have a KP special 150 a night. It's in a beautiful town that you can walk around at night and is about 15 minutes from the Academy. They have several restaurants that are within walking distance from fancy to a great burger at Leo's Bar.
If you want to take the train to the city it's a close walk to the station. It's where Lindbergh stayed before he flew to Paris. I was watching the Spirit of St Louis movie with Jimmy Stewart and there was a sign for the Garden City Hotel.

We've stayed at Andrew and received exemplary service. The rooms are 'nice', but you feel a bit cramped. It is very clean, but looks a little gritty. They open the little breakfast nook when they feel like it, not necessarily when it fits your admittedly hectic KP schedule. It is WAY convenient to the bus and train.

I didn't make reservations soon enough, and found myself at the Garden City Hotel. I could not have been happier. It was built decades later on a larger plot of land... so, uncramped hallways, nice little indoor heated pool and exercise area, quiet little upscale bar, and (ta daa) really spacious rooms. 50% larger than the Andrew. And for the difference in price between the two for a few rooms, you basically pay for your car rental.

And the drive to campus is pretty nice. Of course, my portable Magellan became by best friend getting to/from LGA.

For us, if it is a KP-only flying trip, then we'll likely squeeze into the Andrew and be very happy. But if we get the kid for overnight, have additional guests who want to come, or want to stay a day or three longer, it's likely to be Garden City Hotel + car for the same money.

Our Plebe decided at the last minute that he wanted to sleep in a room all by himself, MUCH to the disappointment of younger brother. Without missing a beat, CGH had the best rollaway mattress in the room and ready for use is WAYY under 10 minutes. It was so nice, the next morning our Plebe fell asleep on it as well -- testing the comfort of all the mattresses I guess.

The service in both these hotels was really fast and friendly.

Having stayed at the Andrew several times, and left with the same feeling you get when you stand on a subway platform too long, we were pleased to find the Inn at Great Neck both comfortable and convenient. Being close to KP, you can sneak back for a little rest if there is some downtime in the schedule. They also provide a pass to the NY Sports Club a few blocks away, which on Friday night was deserted except for two future rap stars who provided musical highlights free of charge. A medley of recent hits.
