Parent's Weekend Hotels

Most of the close ones are already sold out... has anyone stayed at the Red Roof Inn in Westbury? Between either that hotel or staying near LGA... which has cheaper taxi fares to/from Kings Point?

I think it would be cheaper to rent a car for the weekend than pay for long distance taxis. Try to stay on LI or Laguardia. We found several Fairfield Inns further out that worked well. Remember, DS or DD will only want to sleep, eat and possibly hit a store.

Kenz07, our parent's association reported that the Red Roof in Westbury is a very nice hotel plus it is less expensive than the others. With the money you save rent a car.

The Red Roof is fine, we stayed there a couple of years ago, it's only about 3 years old. However, the weekend we stayed there we got lost almost every time we drove to KP or back, until the last day when we finally got it right. I would guess it's a pretty expensive taxi ride since it takes at least 20 min driving time. You might want to call them to see what a taxi may cost. But it's the cheapest hotel in the area, and it's good--not luxurious, but clean and has what you need. You don't spend much time there anyway!

If you rent a car, where did you park when you got to Kings Point? On the street? (I bet the neighbors love that...NOT) Lots on campus? At the stadium?

The cheapest cab fare I've found between KP and LaGuardia was about $35.00 one way. On the other hand the cheapest car rental we could
find last parents weekend was $100.00 a day. The U.S. Open tennis tournament was occuring at the same time and the increased crowds drove prices up. We rented a car and were able to park on a side street a moderate distance from the Academy. Turned right at the gate and kept driving until we found a spot.

what about staying closer to LGA and taking the LIRR into Great neck. anyone know what the taxi cost is from the train station to KP?
indoc I stayed up at glen cove mansion (very nice place, but not on the same LIRR leg). great for going into the city, but not to KP (took taxi that thur morning). Was planning on stayin in manhatten or toward LGA (give S a chance to get away from great neck). if we stay close to LIRR/subway we don't have to rent a car- just taxi from great neck train station to KP. anyone have thoughts on this plan?

The bus from the LIRR at Great Neck is even cheaper for a few people. $2 a person and it runs every 20 min. The taxi from LIRR at Great neck to USMMA was $10 for three.

Not a huge difference but it gives you a choice. With alot of people going to USMMA (ie Indoc) the bus is many times a shorter wait. It runs to the front gate of the academy every 20 min as well.

Note you when taking the bus you either have to have coins or a metro pass. No paper bills allowed.

Careful w/weekend-holiday bus schedule. When we were there on July 4th, bus had just driven away and I told my wife "No problem. another in 20 minutes at most".

Well, she looked at the schedule and in holiday-mode it was every hour. :(

Zonker now better at read tiny tiny numbers on mystic bus schedule. ( :D what a goof!)

last time I WALKED from kp to the train station. don't really want to do that again, but can. funny, when I IM son last night at KP, he didn't seem that sympathic about my long walk that day....

Oh my we stayed at the Glen Cove in off season! Very nice hotel, in Jan you can get it for $99 a night!

actually this rate is good well into the summer. We stayed there in July when we dropped the boy off. nice place, very quite. third floor has a family friendly gameroom w pool, foosball and shuffleboard; has a decent bar also w food. but at $230 a night in Sept it is the Red Roof Inn for this family.

yep. it was a great rate (expedia) for indoc, but jumps in july. looking red roof or equal myself. something toward the city.

It was $230 a night in September, but when I said I was there for USMMA, they dropped it to $160. ALWAYS mention USMMA!!

Well you must have talked to someone special then - I called they had a room but insisted the USMMA rate was $199. I pushed to have reservationist check w her manager and he confirmed $199. For $160 I would go back.

We stayed at the Marriott on Long Island for P/weekend last year -- got a good rate - $159/night, I believe and all those Marriott points! Son wanted to eat, sleep, visit Wal-mart, and see a movie (basically gear down time). I, of course, would have preferred to stay in the city close to Century 21.

We also stay at the Long Island Marriott. We have been going there 3 years now and have reservations for Graduation Weekend (It does come quick). Our first parents weekend she wanted down time -- we came back to the hotel after the football game and ate in the sports restaurant there -- we sat and talked for about three hours -- they did not rush us out even on a Saturday night. There were many other Plebes there (BTW -- this is far enough out so that they don't have to be in uniform). After having breakfast in the hotel (comes with the room) the next morning we went to the city and saw some sites (it was also West Points Parents Weekend so there were plenty of uniforms of all varieties around). We ended the afternoon getting sandwiches at Katz deli (lower east side) and taking them back to the hotel. We watched a movie and she napped until it was time to go back to campus. Biggest thing is don't plan to much -- they need to decompress.

okay I need to show my ignorance and age. How do you post a thread? I can't figure it out.

For rental cars last year during parents weekend we called Hertz and Avis and they were both about 90 a day for a small compact, we did the same thing through price line and got the same car from Hertz for 28 a day.

We Stayed at the Garden City Hotel for a 150 a night, great stay and nice town to walk around. About a 15 minute drive.
