Does anyone know if: scoring 800 in Math on the SATs and scoring 750 in Math on the SAT II and getting a B+ for the year in Honors Calc 1, will allow for placing out of Calc 1 (Math 21) for Engineering?

I think you should refer to this [AP Credits & Calculus Readiness Test](http://cas.lehigh.edu/CASWeb/default.aspx?id=1326) part of Lehigh’s website to answer your question. It really covers every thing you could wonder about placing out.

It says if you’re want to know if a class offered in high school will let you place out, Lehigh has to evaluate it specifically to your case, so no one here can answer that for you. Every high school is different. That’s what makes APs the best thing to take to place out.

mumdev,

There are special placement tests available to students who think they can place out of intro calc classes. A 4 on the AP tests can automatically place you out, but high SATs do not - in that case you have to take the placement exam.

As an engineering major, I have found calculus to be extremely important to succeeding in almost every class I’ve had to take, even as an upperclassman. My freshman-year advisor warned against placing out of Calc I at Lehigh, and I never regretting holding back in using my AP credit.

And frankly, high math scores in the SAT I and II are not equivalent to a 4 or 5 in an AP calculus course. Just be cautious when choosing to skip ahead so quickly.

Mumdev, My son is just beginning his Senior Year in a few weeks and is a BioE major. He, like Mike, was strongly encouraged NOT to place out of calculus by his advisor. He has never regretted listening. The Lehigh Calc 1, 2 and 3 are far more focused on engineering and far more conceptual in nature than his AP Cal AB and BC in high school. As Mike indicates, in engineering it is so important to have a stong Calculus base to build on, he has not regretted back tracking a bit, it has paid off for him in many ways.

Each person muust make their own decisons however, and I do understand the value in shortening the time in Undergrad!

Thank you LehighChemE and mumof2boyz. I appreciate the good advice and as recommended, Math 21 is on board for this Spring Semester.

mumof2boyz,

As a BioE did your son place out of Chem 30 or did he elect not to use his AP credit in this course? My son is an incoming BioE and he will not use his AP Calc AB or BC credits for the same reasons as your son but he is undecided about whether he should place out of Chem 30 (Intro to Chem)?

Thanks

LU2017 - My son did not take AP Chem in high shcool, he could only take one science AP - school rules - and he chose Bio.

I can’t speak to this for Chem, but for Bio, the Lehigh class was identical to the one he took in high shcool, but he could not waive Bio with AP credit. He was given AP credit against another Bio course, can’t recall the name.

One of the ChemE students on the board could probably better address whether it is wise to use your AP credit to waive Chem 30.
