Planning early on transfers HELP!

Today I have finally confirmed that I am indeed attending a community college. All but one UC I applied to rejected me, Davis being the other waitlisted me and eventually rejected me as well.

I think the main reason I didn't receive admission from any of the UCs is because of my lack of planning for my future. I don't want this to happen again; I want to be prepared for transfer admissions.

I need to know about transfer information about the following schools:
Stanford
Johns Hopkins
UC Berkeley
UCLA

I will be majoring in something related to biology.

How difficult is it to transfer to these schools? What should I do to increase my chances of success? Should I be attending a specific community college? Would it be preferable for me to retake my SATs for a higher score? (800M 620CR 630W superscored) What types of extracurricular activities would make me stand out? Besides attaining high grades, should I be focusing on anything else in my cc? (I lack solid writing and reading comprehension skills, should I be improving this)

Thanks for your time. Sorry I had to tell you my anecdote.

Oh and I’m not looking for transfer rates in your answers. I’m well aware of the transfer rates for each school. I’m looking for advice on how to improve my chances of successfully transfering.

You scored a 1320 on your SATs and didn’t get into any of the UCs? I guess you aimed a little high there.

i had a low overall cumulative gpa. even ucsc rejected me lol.

How are you doing an early transfer? First you have to have 60 units to transfer to any UC. For all these schools you should be in the honors program, and apply for UCLA TAP (if live in ca). The only advice would be to do really really really well in CC. And plan on a backup. Any CC in california is great for a UC transfer because they have direct transfer programs (except UCB), i think Santa Monica CC is good one. Biology is a very impacted major, if you are planning on going to medical school you have to have 3.5 + GPA. For these schools you listed i would suggest finding a “coach” to help you plan for exactly you want major in and pursue a career in. many of my pre-med friends have one. Other than that talk your counselor and hopefully you place in advance math class. Look at each schools website to see what their transfer agreements are

reptar

what is this honors program you speak of?

Its different school by school but when you apply and you meet all the qualifications you can get in right out of hs. I think you have to have graduated with a 3.5GPA and be enrolled in the first english class. OR you complete 12 units at CC with 3.25 GPA and in the college level writting class. It may be different at other schools. Look it up on their website

Just remember that if you do decide to transfer early to one these private schools, after one year, they will look at your highschool records for more refrence than your college

Ok thanks. Could I get more information on how I can successfully transfer to privates though? I’m not a godlike athlete nor am I from the army. How can I become one of the 20 that transfer to Stanford without these qualifications?

More than likely you won’t. Stanford prefers non-traditional applicants for their transfer spots.

You can’t. There is nothing you can do to make yourself become a more appealing applicant.

As @Knights09 alluded to, Stanford prefers non-traditional students. These students have unique backgrounds and stories. They bring something to the campus that no one else can offer. You can try to recreate these experiences but your application will just come across as disingenuous.

agree with ^^ i dont know anyone who transfered to Stanford out of a CC. Its very difficult especially as a science major. Private schools from what i heard look mainly at GPA and ooutstanding ec activities from what i heard

i was a transfer student to Emory. i think getting good grades as a freshman is really important. i almost had a 4.0 and got accepted into a lot of great schools for sophomore year, even though i was a huge slacker in high school (took about 3 classes senior year, and only 1 AP)

One of my professors actually told me that Stanford doesn’t accept CC transfers at all. I’m not sure how accurate that is, though, but either way you’re reaching reallllllly high with that one.

To transfer to UCLA, you have to fulfill all these requirements: [Transfer Major Prep - Life Science majors - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/lsmajors/life_sci.htm) and you can only enter as a junior. Berkeley probably has similar requirements, you’d have to check their website.

Your professor is wrong, brickbybrick. I personally know 2 recent CCC to Stanford transfers and met a 3rd. I don’t recall exact stats but I believe at least 1/3 of the 20 transfer students each year are CC students.

OP: are you a male cheerleader from the Pacific rim? Are you a distinguished hiphop DJ with a hit? Have you completed 4 years in the Marines? Are you a 50 year old mother who raised 4 boys? Are you even as remotely unique as these actual Stanford transfer students? No? Then refocus your efforts to schools that will offer you admission bc Stanford is brutal. Spend the 90 bucks and apply but treat it as a lotto ticket and not a serious option.
