Hi, so I have this rough idea for a paper I’d like to write but I’d like some opinions on if you think I’d make a good admissions essay. I’m hoping that its not seen as an insignificant thing to write about, but hopefully I can do a good job with it. Basically, the paper is about how I express my creativity in an unusual way. Instead of through pen or paper, I’ve volunteered at various haunted houses/mazes/attractions throughout high school and have an immense passion for special effects makeup. I want to discuss how being an actor in such a thing allows me to take on a character in which I give my all for hours on end, in which I help make people smile and scream and make memories with their friends and families. Then, I would try to relate this back to me overall as a person and how I want to use such creativity to help make small positive impacts on peoples lives. Do you think this is interesting? My only hesitation is it has nothing to do with my major (nutrition) but it does show one of my overall life goals in a different way.
Essays don’t have to be related to your major unless the prompt specifically says so. Sounds interesting to me!
Write the essay only you could write…

“It was Saturday night and I was just doing my job…Jumping around a corner and scaring people.”
I think that could make an excellent essay. Agree with @bodangles that it sounds interesting. Sort of like Rory in the Something*Positive comic (although he’s much younger).
Sounds like an interesting piece even if it wasn’t an application essay.
We’re all suckers for nature in my house. Try reading some Mary Oliver with some Darwin if you get stuck.
I think it is a great topic. Go for it. Admissions doesn’t care a ton about your major. They know students change majors all the time. It’s nice if you have some EC related to your planned major, and have taken the classes that seem most in line with it if offered at your HS. But your essay does not need to discuss your major at all.
