Okay, this is urgent.

I have to fill out my New Student preferences at Stony Brook. However, the first question asks me to set a setting of 1 - 5 for six different undergraduate colleges. My friend and I want to room together, and I hear that if we choose the College of Information and Technology Studies as our highest priority (5), that we'd get into the newest camping house. (P.S., we've both been accepted to the College of Arts and Sciences). The problem is that I will transfer to the College of Business in the Spring '07 semester, so which undergraduate college would be the best for me to choose? My friend tells me that it doesn't matter which undergraduate college of the six you choose (College of Arts, Culture, and Humanities; College of Global Studies; College of Human Development; College of Information and Technology Studies; College of Leadership and Service; College of Science and Society) because you have to take the same classes anyway.

So, my question is: Is my friend correct? Would it matter if I enter the undergraduate college of information and technology studies with him if neither of us are planning to major in anything involving technology?

Thank you in advance for any or all help.

it doesn't matter.
you get the new housing? sweet. i just got my letter yesterday that i'm in ITS. nice!

Your friend is right; it doesn't really matter whether the undergraduate college you end up in has anything to do with your major. It decides where you live, so if you go with ITS you might feel a little out of place because most of the other freshman in your quad might be in tech related majors, but past freshman year people tend to shuffle around so it's not like any quad is a monoculture by any means. Your undergraduate college only affects one one-credit class you take freshman year, so it really doesn't matter much other than for housing.

Your friend's information about ITS getting the newest dorms doesn't sound right, though... as of now, ITS is in Mendelsohn quad, one of the older quads. It's possible that Mendy's getting renovated over the summer (I know Roosevelt, which isn't in such great shape now, is getting redone), but I don't know anyone who lives there and haven't heard anything about it. If you want to list your undergraduate college preferences according to what housing you want, you're better off looking at the website and cross-referencing where each college is (http://ws.cc.stonybrook.edu/sb/colleges/) with housing's information (http://studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/res/campusLiving)

Good luck!
