This is my dream school. The only thing I believe is lacking is my GPA, otherwise, I believe that I am a well rounded student.

Michigan resident, goes to a top 20 in Michigan pubic school.

Thanks in advance.

the only thing that will be hard for you to overcome will be your GPA. as you already know, it is subpar for Michigan. i suggest that you do NOT apply EA so that Michigan can get your 1st semester’s grades on your transcript and factored into your GPA. Also, why are you taking BC after taking AB? that class will be mostly a waste because it also has to cover what was covered in AB. i suggest that you instead take Calc2 in the fall at a local CC or university and then take Calc3(multivariable) in the spring. this will look A LOT better on your transcript with DE credit. If your school tells you that you can’t and they won’t pay for it they are lying. they are required by law to pay for your tuition when you have maxed out your options(which technically you have because you would have to retake AB so the law comes into effect). the school gets quite a substantial subsidy from the state so they will basically pay nothing for you to take the classes anyway.

in-state: get 3.7 and you’re good.

Get your GPA up and you are good to go.

Sent from my iPhone using CC

Agree with xzxpvp7xzx. Try to get the GPA above a 3.7. Make sure you are taking classes in the fall that you think you will get A’s in - as long as the class have some substances, that is more important than the rigor. Better to get an A in a regular class than a B in an AP class. If your high school has a high acceptance rate at U-M, that will also help. ACT score of 32 is pretty good; I doubt taking it again will improve your chances. Write good essays and get evaluations from teachers who think you are smart.

you’ll get deferred with those stats. do well senior year, and you’re in. (if you’re instate)

You remind me of well…me! But that’s actually not good for you because I had a 3.64 (UW), 33 ACT, took all accelerated/ AP courses and went to an Ann Arbor high school and I was deferred and rejected. I talked to an admissions counselor and was told they had no doubts over my ability to handle the course load but did wonder if I would actually apply myself at Michigan. So basically my GPA did me in. My biggest problem was that I did poorly my first semester senior year so I couldn’t turn in more grades to boost my effort at getting into Michigan. I’m almost certain if I had tried harder first semester, I would be at Michigan right now so my advice to you is to get as close to a 4.0 as you can first semester senior year. Don’t make the same mistake that I did because you do not want to regret not trying harder for the next two years while at another school. I’m sure a lot of your friends will go to Michigan and trust me, you do not want to hear how awesome Michigan is from them when you’re not there. Just make sure you work really hard and get some really awesome grades and then you’ll be fine. Good luck!

Alright, thanks for the replies. My schedule for my first semester senior year is: AP Chem, 2D CAD, Physics, Weight Training, 12th grade LA and AP Calc BC/or AP Psych. I can handle 2 AP’s fine. 4 (like junior year) would be a struggle lol

I also have legacy, as both my mom and uncle and two cousins have gone here. (not a factor, but there nonetheless…)

Basically, get a 4.0 first semester, and I am competitive for admission?
Thanks again. This means a lot to me.

Don’t listen. Especially in-state, you’re in. The people on CC always compare you to other CCers rather than applicants as a whole. Your stats are probably better than 90% of applicants.

^^
statlanta – he’s not definitely in.

the OP’s stats are far from the top 10% of applicants.

ThatOneKid how did you manage to get the research opportunity at Wayne State? Do you know if it’d be possible to still get one now (although not for medicine; for engineering)?

Oh and if you can get your ACT up to compensate I really think you’re in good shape. Your ECs look good to me and demonstrate leadership. I have the same problem as you (low GPA) and it sucks.

A higher ACT is not going to compensate for a low GPA especially if the OP already has a 32. There’s just not that much difference between a 3.6/32 and a 3.6/34. If OP has a good first semester senior year, his changes will improve; if his GPA falls, the ACT score is not going to help.

@statlanta why are you even chancing people and giving false hope by telling them that “you’re in”? you haven’t even applied to college yet so you have absolutely no idea what its like to get into michigan. you even have a chance thread on this very forum. if you knew what it took you wouldn’t be asking others. the OP’s gpa is low compared to those that got in this year. also, his/her stats are nowhere near the top 10% of michigan. that doesn’t mean that his/her stats are bad, just nowhere near the stats of those kids

Applying EA or regular doesn’t make a difference because he’ll likely be deferred. Michigan will want to see his first semester grades. The benefit of applying EA is that admissions officers may take extra looks at his application which ensures that he gets it thoroughly examined.
