Please Chance/Help a Junior

Ok, so I currently have a VERY long list of colleges, and I have put them into categories (reach, match etc.) And I basically want to see if my ideas about the chances I have are correct, and any help narrowing down the list would be helpful.

Student:

User Name: AdequateRemedy
Gender: F
Location: NorCal
College Class Year: 2013
High School: Public
High School Type: sends some grads to top schools (last year we had 5 people go to Stanford I believe)

Academics:

GPA - Unweighted: 4.00
GPA - Weighted: 4.80 (right now with freshman and junior year it is 4.67 but it should go up to about 4.8 by graduation)
Class Rank: top 5 students
Class Size: about 500
AP’s:
AP Biology: 5
I am currently taking AP Chemistry, language, and statistics (I couldn’t make ap us history didn’t fit in my schedule <.<)
Senior year I will take AP Physics B (C isn’t offered), AP Lit, AP Gov/Econ, and then one of AP Calculus AB (BC isn’t offered, but I would self study to take the BC exam) or AP Spanish since they are the same period (our counseling office is ■■■■■■■■), but I would take the other course at the Junior College next door (one of the best in the nation)

Scores:

SAT II Biology - M: 730
I haven’t taken ACT’s or SATs yet, but on the PSAT I scored 203 (ugh) but I don’t plan to settle for anything less than 2200 on the SAT

Extracurriculars/Community Service:

Ok so this is the iffy part. I don’t have very many but there are two in particular that I devote A LOT of time too, and therefore don’t have time for much else.

Competitive Horse Back Riding (three fay eventing specifically), I’ve done this since I was nine, and have to devote 14 hours a week to it (2 hours daily), no exceptions. It is a big responsibility as no matter how tired/sick/busy I am I have to go take care of my horse.

Key Club (10-12), I am currently secretary of the club and next year I will be president. I currently devote between and hour or two a week of just admin hours, and that will probably be more like five next year. I am very active in it, and fully plan to join Circle K in college, or charter a Circle K club if the college does not already have one. I currently have about 100 community service hours (seperate from admin hours) through Key Club but that should increase to about 200 by the time I apply to college.

As far as other EC’s go I am secretary of the Junior Statesmen of America Club(11-12), Active member of Math Club (10-12), Member of Herpotology Club (10…it died), and once I can get a hold of the volunteer coordinator I plan to volunteer regularly at Canine Companions International (the western region has its headquarters in my town). I’m a member of the California Scholarship Federation. And…thats all I can think of right now.

Oh and over the summer I will be going to a CTY program in China on game theory (I know CTY doesn’t help much, but china is number 3 of countries I want to go to, and game theory is something that really interests me)

I got an A in an online EPGY course on Computer Science if that matters…

Legacy:
Mother- Cornell undergrad, Columbia Grad
Father- Cornell undergrad, Columbia Grad
Sister- Currently undergrad at UMICH
Grandfather- Columbia undergrad and grad, and past law professor at Columbia
And through aunts and uncles I have connections to harvard, yale, and UC Berkeley but I’m not sure if aunt/uncle connections really matter

As for the college I want to apply to, here is the list (UC’s are listed seperately, because I dont particularly want to go to one, but my parents will make me apply to a few, and through ELC the top 5% of our class gets acceptance into some UC based on preference and availibility):

High Reach-
Yale
Princeton
Harvard
Stanford

Low Reach-
Brown
Dartmouth
UPENN
Columbia
Mcgill

Match-
Carleton
Williams
Carnegie Mellon (SCS)
Cornell
Macalaster
University of Rochester
Northwestern
Pomona
University of British Columbia

Safety-
NYU
Bates
UMich
UVA

UC’s-
UCLA
Berkeley
UCSD

Oh and I’ll be visiting a lot of colleges in the summer to help narrow it down, and I plan to major in some combination of Mathematics, Economics, and Computer Science.

NYU a safety?...not to sure about that. I'd call it a match.

yeah I wasn't sure what to do with nyu becAuse I know it is really popular but also its sat ranges didn't seem super high, do you think everything else fits though?

UVA is not a safety!!! especially since your OOS

I'm sorry, what does OOS stand for?

I didn't actually look into admission much at UVA but I had heard it is about the same as UMICH, so put it in the same category. And I'm fairly certian I can get into UMICH because my sister did and I have more ec's, more volunteer, better grades, harder courses, and presumbly will have higher SATs.

get that SAT score if you want a chance at the UCs

Um, UVA IS NOT A SAFETY. UVA is definetly a reach, and its as hard to get in as any of the Ivy Leagues for a OOS'er.

Umich will be a safety if you score 2300+ on the SAT, same w/ NYU.

But UVA is not a safety...they reject OOS'ers all w/ stats such as yours, not to sound evil

btw adequateremedy, OOS = out of state. (right, LOL?)

my friend turned down princeton, columbia, and cornell for uva

My apologies, for UVA it was the least-researched colelge in the bunch and was under a false impression of where to put it.

hmm you do have a long list, but I really don't advise you applying to every single Ivy just because they're Ivys... Don't get deceived by the name. And Penn and Columbia have become increasingly hard to get into and are not too far below HYPS, especially if you want Wharton

McGill = safety

I should stop saying this.

really? I figuersdit would be if I was in Canada but I thought it would harder for me since I'm in the US

Carleton, Williams, and Pomona--if not more of your "match" schools--should be at least low reaches.

Your qualifications are fine (test scores pending) but your list is really REALLY top-heavy. Several of your "matches"/"safeties" just...aren't...and that goes for just about everyone, nothing against you personally.
