Honestly, I think your gpa is too low compared to other successful applicants’.
I understand that your courses are most challenging, but top schools want students who do well even when they’re challenging themselves.
That aside, your high standard testing scores and focus on music and math might be enough to get you into the schools.
Anyway, write brilliant essays and I think you could have a decent chance at Columbia and Northwestern.

i visited carnegie mellon and i really liked it! i hope.
but im scared for financial aid cause of my gpa…
also, i will get really great recs from my bc teacher and maybe my physics teacher
(im the only one who got 800 in physics)…
would this help my chances at carnegie? or any other colleges?

CMU = In
U Mich = iffy since you are out of state but definitely a good shot
Northwestern = Match to reach, hard to tell
Columbia = High reach, GPA too low

thank you! i visited cmu during my February break. i really love the thought of living there for 4 years and meeting new people. sighhh i really wish my gpa was higher though

As usual, I’m simply amazed at some of the BS I read on this site. You do realize you are asking a bunch of your competitors (and their parents) to “chance” you and that they are as ignorant as you are about what it takes to get into a top school. Ignore them.

Your stats are what they are and some of the answers you read here are designed to make you feel insecure. Ignore them.

The real question is: Where do you want to go? If you love the schools you are applying to, then tell them what you love about them. Write an essay that tells them who you are, not what you think they want to hear. And for heaven’s sake, don’t post your essays here and ask some random stranger to “chance” you. Give it to people you know who will be honest with you and don’t have anything to gain by making you feel bad about yourself.

Mass mom, one has to wonder about the depth of your knowledge. As a long time admissions officer, my advice is to please not tell schools “what you love bout them.” that most often results in the gag reflex. Do you have ny clue what the competition is for Korean applicants who need aid?

shimkihoon, you need to take it down a few notches. Waverly is one of the most experienced and respected posters on CC regarding admissions to top-tier schools. You asked for honest feedback, which she provided. You resented her honesty because it didn’t confirm your presumptions about yourself. Clearly you prefer to be “chanced” by high school kids who don’t know WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT, because it coddles your ego.

Persons like Waverly ARE the adcoms who will read your applications and a bit of humility might go far. Your overwrought personal attacks – because Waverly dared be honest with you – are symptomatic of a personality trait you need to address, because these schools admit not just on stats, but on evidence of CHARACTER!

To be entirely honest, if a rigorous course load is weighing you down at this point in high school, that won’t reflect well on your potential success in college.

First of all, I am not your competitor (Class of 2015).
I think you have great chances at Michigan and decent chances at CMU.

But,
NW: Reach (RD), Decent chances (ED)
Columbia: High reach (ED or RD)

GPA: PROBLEM! You will be competing against Asians or Asian Americans with most rigorous courses with high GPAs.
SAT and SAT scores: They are good but there are many Asians with similar or batter numbers.

You might get lucky with your music EC if Columbia needs a cellist.

You need to apply to many top colleges, and then hope for the best.
Good luck to you!

It seems that you want to double major in music and something else as all those schools hav great music programs and obviously great academically. Cmu and umich have great music programs. Northwestern has one of the best that is not considered a conservatory which is bienen. Columbia doesnt have a great music dept, but u could do the columbia juilliard exchange where u get 2 degrees (this is definitely the hardest to get into). I applied to all those schools except columbia (wanted to get away from east coast and didnt like any of the ivies) and i gotten in to both their music program (i play piano btw) and their academic college. If u play cello as well as u say, u could get a scholarship, and I mean big bucks, especially if u or ur teacher have connections. As for ur chances, ur gpa is the low point, but I also had an iffy gpa. Ur sats r much better than my act scores (and by fa my sat scores, o hate the sats :P)
Cmu and umich- low reach
Northwestern ed - low reach
Northwestern rd- reach to high reach
Columbia ed - reach
Columbia rd- high reach

i dont have any connections… but my teachers always say that i have so much potential. which colleges did you get into?
and lol, but what are reaches and matches?
is gpa that much of a problem though?
im going to try harder in college than in high school. i dont respect public schools… i hate public schools-_-

oh and i got a B in bc calc. but i know i got a 5 on my ap test…
physics b i got a B. but i got 800 sat physics…
and chem… just 800
im planning on doing sat history… would this higher my chances?
