Essays: commonapp: edited 15 times. everyone i showed said was amazing (about 30 said it was good and 2 said it needed revision) lol....... i wrote my perspective on building and creating through building a truss at a university.
my cmu supplement: i showed my particular interest in cmu's cit program. i wrote about a specific professor and the things i would that advantage at cmu.

Hooks? Im korean but im the first person in my family to go to college (how would this help)?

Carnegie Mellon ED ENGINEERING**
Lehigh
Umich
UIllinois
RPI
Stevens
Villanova
Boston College
NYU (legacy kinda)

50/50 ED at CMU as verbal below CIT’s 25% median and rank well below 7% avg there. But ED will help as will math SAT and solid curriculum. As for others, my guesses based on same factors NYU 40/60 (not sure what legacy kind of means, but might increase this a bit), UMich OOS and BC 50/50, RPI, Villanova, Lehigh, UIUC OOS 70/30. Stevens = safety. Good luck.

Hey! I don’t know too much about CMU, but I had a friend who talked about it 24/7, so I’ll give it a shot.

You have a pretty good shot at CMU and Boston College. You’re SAT score may be slightly below par, but it’s by no means an average score. And your ECs are very strong. The rest of the colleges are very good matches IMO, and you’re pretty much guaranteed admission at UI and Stevens.

Quick question- when you write CIT, are you referring to Carnegie Institute of Tech? I think the previous poster thought you reserve referring to Calatech, so I just wanted to clarify.

Best if luck and I’m sure you’ll succeed wherever you matriculate.

Colleges love first-generation college students, but how is that possible if you have a legacy at NYU? Your ECs are pretty good and music focused, which is a plus. You can never be 100% sure, but I think you have a very very strong chance at each one of these colleges. You’ll definitely go somewhere great, don’t worry lol :)

I’m 90% sure you’ll get into the vast majority of the schools that aren’t CMU, and a very good chance of getting into CMU. Although your CR score is a bit low, your high math score shows that you are more focused in a specific area and that is completely fine.

ipodlover, both my parents didnt go to college. but my dad’s brother went to nyu and supposedly went to suny somewhere… but i am still 1st generation?
feminist, i really want to go to cmu. i wrote about what i wanted to do at cmu via the supplement. it should be really goood so i def show lots of interest?

I think you have a good chance at CMU, would say it’s a match. Your CR score is a little on the low side but I don’t think it will matter much to the adcoms at CMU. You’re easily in at all the others.

I agree with most people on this thread. I frankly don’t know about the admissions at enough of these schools to give a remotely accurate chance, but you are decent, academically speaking, and have fine EC’s. I guess the main problem you might run into is “standing out” in the application process. Best of luck!

BUMP my un gpa is low… does this not alert anyone??? cmu said they change w to uw… fckkkk
&oh. my essay is where i stand out. i got it opinated by many, many, many people. more in college haha

how does ED give people a boost? i dont understand…
and yeah, junior year i got all Bs… -_- it was transition year from honors to 3 aps.
but my essays are stellar. all my college friends said it was amazjjjing.

It DOES matter, but so do the actual grades that are on your transcript. the weighted GPA tells the school that yes, you DO take the rigorous courses but the UW GPA tells them how well u did in them.

Hey, thanks for chancing me.
One of my wealthier cousin sisters is doing her Masters at CMU, and from what she has told me, it is a very GOOD school.
Your scores are in the 25-75 percentile range for CMU. Academically youre qualified. Essays and LORs will be the make or break factor here.

Also, not to rain on your parade or something, but I dont really think that your relative going to NYU would count as a legacy, you should email the Adcoms there. (I could be wrong).
Also I think you have a higher chance of getting into NYU than into CMU (since CMU hass one of the most sought after engg. programs). You will get into many schools from your list though. Give extra care to your essays. All the best.
:)

Essays can’t really compensate for low GPA/SAT’s. Also, Carnegie Mellon doesn’t look at freshman grades, so doing badly in junior year could actually hurt you a lot. Here’s my opinion of your chances based on each important admissions factor.

GPA: As far as your GPA goes, how is a 3.4 UW considered top 15%? Do you attend a private school or a really, really competitive public? If so, you’re GPA will not be a problem. If not, it can really drag you down.
Course Rigor: I know that you’re concerned about your GPA but you should probably be worried about your course rigor as well. Unless you’re high school is super rigorous, 2 AP classes is not that impressive (I took 6 AP classes my junior year and I know a few people who took 7).
SAT and SAT II: Good job on the Math section, but a low CR score will definitely hurt you. Just because you’re applying for engineering doesn’t mean that you can get by with low CR and W scores. Nearly every selective colleges wants to see well-rounded SAT scores. SAT II’s won’t hurt you, but a lot of students at Carnegie Mellon have 800 on Math II. You might want to retake them if you have the time.
EC’s: Excellent. Only problem I see is that you didn’t do any science research or join any HS science clubs. CIT like science activites over math activites because engineering is more about science than math.
Hooks: First generation will not help you much if you have another sibling in college. If you’re the first child to attend college, it can probably help you a little. Don’t count on it too much.
Race: Keep in mind that you’re an Asian male applying for engineering. Of all the different colleges at Carnegie Mellon, affirmative action is the most intense at CIT and SCS (there are just too many Asian males applying to both colleges).
Essays: If you’re essays are as good as you think they are, then good job. I’m absolutely terrible at college essays, so I am envious at how confident you are in your writing. Again, essays can definitely help you, but it would be bad to rely on them exclusively. A good personal statement should make the adcoms like you AFTER they decide that they like your stats.
