I really want to go to Skidmore, but I have no idea how likely it is that I get in. My GPA is currently a 90.5, I got a 1430 on my SATs, a 30 on my ACTs (Ik Skidmore is test optional, but idk if this could help), I have taken 3 APs, and 7 honors classes. I also am in 3 volunteer clubs and president of one of them. I have visited the campus and met with an admissions counselor that came to my school. Can someone please give me an idea if I have a shot?
I think you are in GREAT shape to get in. Would you apply ED if it’s your first choice?
Your SAT score is better than your ACT and is good so I would submit that. I think you have a good chance of getting in. Just know that half the class this year got in ED so that substantially increases your odds if financial aid isn’t a factor. Good luck.
My daughter got 1450 SAT, 4.25 W GPA, 3.85 UW, 8 ap’s with many EC and got wait listed, she needed a good amount of financial aid I speculate the financial aid kept her out, but not sure. Anyone from Skidmore feel free to PM me and let me know.
Skidmore is a wonderful college. Your stats look good; use the SAT. Of course, no one has a crystal ball to see who will or will not be accepted, and most posters are students, parents, and prospective students, not admissions counselors! But you can see that, statistically, you are in a good position relative to other accepted students.
@Akqj10 curious if she applied ED or RD.
jnkam24 We don’t (didn’t) have the financial resources to apply early decision. When looking at the dot graphs and other research ( more hours on this site than I would like to admit ) Skidmore should have been a likely for students with her stats. I will be glad to share any more information if you want you can send me a private message.
My impression is no required financial aid is a very helpful factor in admissions. For a school of its rank (mid 30’s to 40’s of LACs) Skidmore gives minimal if any merit aid compared to competitors. Receives tons of applications (no essay, test optional, Saratoga Springs, etc… Also think demonstrated interest is more important than other schools.
Hi, I just wanted to share that my son who now is a freshmen needed a substantial amount of financial aid and Skidmore provided a very generous grant. He applied early decision. He is thrilled, so happy at the school. I actually think kids have a higher chance of receiving a significant grant if they apply early, as the funds are just then starting to be distributed to the incoming freshmen at that time.
I second sequoia123’s comment. Our freshman daughter ED’d, and was accepted with a very generous aid package. Her stats were slightly higher than the OP’s, but similar.
Things that help…
- Are you a prospective athlete? It definitely helps.
- ED, ED, ED. For the class of 2021, the ED acceptance rate was 52%, while the RD acceptance rate was 23%. Huge advantage to ED applicants. (overall acceptance rate was 24.5%)
- Demonstrated interest. Seems like you have this one covered, but the more, the better. Maybe an interview with a specific Professor from within your anticipated major? It worked for our daughter.
Lastly, one of the things that I think is most misunderstood about ED applications is that although you are agreeing to attend should you be accepted, that agreement only applies if you receive the financial aid package that you needed. It is perfectly acceptable, and totally legal to apply ED, be accepted, not receive the aid that you need, and then withdraw your interest. Colleges know this, so they are generally highly motivated to make sure that all accepted students (both ED and RD) receive all the aid that their Net Price Calculator indicates that they need. Yes, Skidmore is need aware, but they also commit to meeting 100% of all demonstrated need, for any accepted students.
Long story short, financial aid need, whether it be large or small, should never discourage you from taking advantage of the ED acceptance percentage.
My brother had a 103 weighted GPA in all honors and AP classes, went to an early college senior year, and got at 1550 on new SAT. He visited and interviewed and still didn’t get in. I think if he had demonstrated even more interest and needed less financial aid he would have gotten in. However, he is now happy at Brown.
abrams00, that a surprise about your brother, Skidmore’s average SAT is 1310, they seem to Wait List qualified candidates, maybe they understate the need for financial being a factor, or are Tuffs syndroming some applicants.
I am very interested in Skidmore College and actually attended NYSSSA summer intensive on the campus for 2 years receiving high school credits for this. My school offers very limited AP courses so I have only been able to take 2. Aside from this I am in every honors course my school offers ( besides calculus because I am not as strong in math). My average is a 90 and we do not weight average at my school. As the school is test optional I decided not to send mine in as I got a 1290 and this is lower than their average. Do I have a chance to be accepted into this college as a political science/ dance dual major? Any information will help, thank you!
newyork1616, it depends if you need financial aid. If you need a lot of financial aid, it doesn’t look good. My daughter got wait listed last year with 1450 SAT, 4.25 GPA, 8 ap’s, and took Ap cal as a Junior. She needed a got of financial aid. I think whether you need financial aid plays a much bigger factor than what they told us at the info session.
