<p>As an out of state applicant, it’s important that your application be particularly strong. IMO you need to improve your ACT score to be a strong candidate. Here’s what the UMCP website has to say:</p>

The admitted freshman students have a strong A-/B+ or better average in their high school coursework and enrolled in the most challenging courses available to them including honors, Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses. For Fall 2012, students admitted to the University of Maryland have an average (weighted) GPA of 4.11 and the middle 50% of SAT scores ranged from 1250 to 1400, and between 28-32 on the ACT. As a result 25% of the admitted students scored below a 1250 on the SAT and 25% scored above a 1400.

<p>Just to add to JenPam’s post, you should know that UMD does not look at the SAT writing score, only critical reading and math. That is why the middle 50% of SAT scores only range from 1250 to 1400 - that’s on the 1600 scale, not 2400.</p>
