Please give me advise!!

I am a Junior and i go to a pretty good school. I am soooo nervous and my parents are really giving me a hard time about this. Can anyone please help me about my chances with NYU, Chicago, UC San Diego, UCLA, Wellesly, maybe UPENN. # 1 school is NYU!

haha dude are u korean?? prob since u took korean sat. well im korean too, and my parents also gave me a hard time.

ok so i got into uc irvine and san diego. i applied to cornell, carnegie mellon, johns hopkins, usc, ucla, and berkely, and got rejected from all of them. so im going to uci.

so before i tell u what schools u prob will get into, what school do u go to?? private or public. cuz if u go to private, it will be harder to get into a good school if u aren't the top few students in yur class.

these were my stats:
gpa:4.2 weighted, 3.8 un
SAT: 2040
sat 2: korean 800
sat 2: math 700

took i ap junior, then 4 senior.
been in every club since freshmen, also made a club with two friends senior year.

almost same volunteer hours.

so were basically the same, and if u don't change yur sat scores, or gpa, i can guarantee that u will not get into ucla or chicago. nyu is almost like usc, and usc has been getting tough to get into, so nyu might be hard to get into for u. but im pretty sure that u will get into sd, its not hard, especially with yur stats.

i seriously thought that i would get into usc, ucla, and berkeley. but the people who got into those schools at my school were the top 20 students, those who had 2100 sat scores, honors classes since freshmen year, and valedictorians.

so don't sweat it, yur almost done with high school, and if u dont have the grades now, u can't get into nyu or ucla. not saying this to sound mean, but i don't want people stressing and spending money on sat classes since sopmore year, since i did that and ended up at irvine, althought the people who also got in had 1700 sat and 3.2 gpa, so i wasted my time for nothing.

learn how to spell is my advi*c*e

I saw your thread a while ago, but haven't been on CC for a week or so. I don't think the replies you got were very helpful, so I thought I would chip in with my $.02.

First, I think you should take a few deep breaths: it is a very long process with many steps along the way. You will be the greatest help to yourself is you can manage to let go of some of the anxiety you're feeling now. I know it's hard, but try not to look out to the horizon, and instead just focus on the next thing you have to do.

Second, I don't think that you should place much weight on information from Stevie1025, or anyone else who says "Hey, you're just like me...we have all the same stats, so you will probably get the same results as I did." The reality is that, although it is a numbers driven process in large measure, AdComs at different school are looking for different things. Scores, gpa, ECs, etc., only give them part of the picture of who you are. And there may be things about you or your interest in their school that sets your application apart from the herd in their eyes.

So, third, I think the best thing you can do for yourself is identify what will be most important to you about your college experience: do you want a strong professional theater school? do you want a pre-professional type undergrad experience? do you want a "life of the mind" type of academic atmosphere? do you want to party hard/work hard? do you want that solid gold Ivy reputation? whatever it is you consider the most important thing is what you should go for. There are many colleges out there, of varying degrees of difficulty to get into (with the exception of the Ivy reputation category), that will answer your needs and interests. After you've identified what it is you're looking for, go talk to your college counselor, or if you don't have one who will help you (and there certainly are kids in that situation), come back to CC with your goals and people here will make recommendations. Some suggestions you will have to take with a grain of salt, but you will in any case get advice.

Finally, while I don't think that focsuing too heavily on numbers is productive, I do think it would be a good idea to try to raise your SATs a bit. If you can reach the magic 700 level on each section, that puts you into a category of applicants where most schools wouldn't have to justify offering you a spot.

All of that being said, I would guess that your application would do pretty well at NYU. The U of Chicago AdCom is so particular that no one can really count on a positive result from them. I'm afraid I don't know much about the California system, so I can't help you there. Wellesley and UPenn would be reaches, I imagine.

Good luck with the whole thing. Like I said, it is a long process, but you can always come back to CC for some advice or direction.

I think with those SATs you'll have to retake. You MIGHT have a chance at UCSD if you are in state. If out of state, not.

Are you applying this fall? I don't mean to sound mean or anything, but if you are applying this fall, I don't think UPenn is very likely. More students are applying for two reasons: there are more students with each graduating class (there's a point when this is no longer true, but I forget when this point is. I just remember it isn't any time soon) and more schools are using the common app, making it easier for students to apply (just fill it out once, do the supplements, send and done). With increased competition, you are going to need a hook. I don't know you and you didn't really post all the info admissions committees look at so I can't completely judge whether or not the other schools would be reaches or matches.

I read somewhere (forgot where) that schools (as in adcoms) have particular molds for what they want their students to look like and if you speak to students who all attend the same school, you will notice a few things that are the same throughout. I'm not sure if this is true, but I would suggest speaking to students who currently attend the schools you are interested in and asking them for some advice. After all, they already got in.

You will get into UC SD I think- others I can't tell.
