Sitting back and watching the world fall into destruction is the pinnacle of unproductiveness. Yes, it’s easy to say “That’s not my job,” but if a person sees problems he or she knows needs fixing, who does that person think is going to come to the rescue? If we all leave the problems of our society as someone else’s responsibility, nothing would get accomplished. Martin Luther King showed how imperative it was to take control of issues in our world. In the novel Lord of the Flies, Ralph had no choice but to take control of a horrendous situation.
Martin Luther King lived his life pained that his race was not seen equal in the American eye. But was he supposed to sit around and hope the government would do something to change his place in life? That same government was the one that not even 150 years before said enslavement of African Americans was okay. King was proactive in standing up for what he believed in. He rallied for equal rights. He led the country in seeing true equality in all American citizens. He had a dream and he took action, reaching for the stars in the hopes that his vision would transcend into reality.
In the Lord of the Flies, Ralph and several other boys survived a plane crash that led them stranded on an Island. With no adult supervision or means to get off the Island, Ralph knew he must step up. It wasn’t Ralph’s fault they were stuck on an Island, but he tried his hardest to get them rescued by stressing the importance of keeping a fire burning in the hope that a ship might see the smoke.
Be the change you wish to see in the world. If every person waited for someone else to get things done, this world would not be where it is today. The United States has equality because someone had the fortitude to speak up for it. When a fire breaks out in apartment building, people are rescued because someone takes action to rush into the burning inferno. They go in even though they had nothing to do with how it ignited. The world is full of examples of problems being solved because someone said “That isn’t right. I need to something about it.”
