Topic : Can censorship limit people’s rights ?
Response :
In my opinion censorship does limit people's rights. Censorship restricts one's freedom of speech, the spread and sharing of information is stifled. Motivating factors for censorship may include family values, religion, political views etc. I truly believe that censorship can have a dangerous impact on individuals' lives and a couple of examples pertaining to the condition of North Korea and broadcasting censorship in Pakistan will help construe my views.
My first example of how censorship limits people's rights is about the deterioating social condition of North Korea. Since Kim Jon Un took over as the supreme leader and the dictator, various ridiculous laws have been implemented in the state. Can you inagine a country without internet. Yes, you read it right. That's North Korea. Only a few people from the dicdator's family have the privelage of accessing the internet. Even the press and the media are censored. the press does not have the independence of circulating brusque reports unanimously. Every article is first approved by the government and if found to be objectionable, disapproved. If anyone expresses resentment towards the state, he is imprisoned and tortured, and in some cases even sentenced to death. Such violation of basic human rights has led to a drop in the economy and therefoe the state has to rely on unethical trade likedrug-dealing, smuggling etc. Thus we can see how large-scale censorship in North Korea has adversely effected people's basic human rights and has also effected the development of the country.
Similar to North Korea, Pakistan also practices a lot of censorship, but mostly with the content shown on television and in movies. This has led to an obivious downfall of Tollywood-film industry of Pakistan which in turn has forced talented singers and actors to come to India to prove theire mettle. This deprives Pakistan of a bunch of exceedingly talented individuals. This shows how censorship has effected these artists and how it has snached their right to work in their motherland.
To write off, I would just like to mention that censorship leads to a repressed society lacking innovative instincts. Examples from the censorship in North Korea and Pakistan clearly show how putting bans has put its citizents at a disadvantage.
