1) As a Senior with quite a lot of knowledge on the subject, my advice is don’t be dumb enough to walk around campus with an empty or even closed container unless you are 21. Stick to the mild smelling easily concealable vodka in the dorms. Refer to [url=<a href=“http://alcohol.fsu.edu/policy.html]Alcohol.fsu.edu[/url”>http://alcohol.fsu.edu/policy.html]Alcohol.fsu.edu[/url] to look at the penalties.
2) Closest shopping area for food, Ocala Street Publix. Colsest for prescription drugs, I would say the CVS off Tennessee down Chapel next to University Village.
3) Google
4) Frenchtown, behind the strip i wouldn’t walk around my myself unless you are a decent sized dude and can run away lol
5) Check your account statement
6) Contact student accounts/ Google tuition flex payments fsu
7) No clue
8) No, the professor does not care where you purchase the books. My advice for textbooks, wait a day or two into class to see if you really NEED the book. Sometimes professors end up listing books you really don’t even need, so don’t purchase them unless you are sure. Freshman classes tend to do that frequently.
9) There are several busses that take you around the majority of living areas, with some “shopping” areas i only can think of food shopping. In terms of clothes shopping, there are Star Metro busses which are available free to FSU students with an FSU ID that can take you to governors square mall. I used to take them as a Freshman, but your best bet is to befriend someone with a car that will take you.
10) I live off Chapel Drive and bike around. Bikes are pretty convenient just be ready to brake frequently since people like to randomly stop in the middle of the sidewalks to talk to their new friends…
11) Seriously? people have different styles. I wouldn’t know what your generation likes to wear, since apparently everyone likes to look like Justin Beiber and dress like nerds.
12) TWIN XL Blankets/sheets. Shower caddy if you are living in a community style dorm, so you can put your toothbrush/shampoo/soap in one container to carry to the showers. Towel for showering, towel for the gym (small). Some plates, bowls, cutlery. Computer/laptop/ethernet cord.
13) Sleep/eat/live there
14) Yes. And OMG you are in for a treat. Not sure if they still do it, but on Fridays they have Fried Chicken fridays, honey fried chicken was the highlight of my hungover freshman mornings/afternoons.
15) Winter can be pretty mild like last year, or decently cold towards night (25 i remember it being as a sophomore). Decent sized jacket you won’t need a huge down jacket with gloves unless you can’t handle anything below 40.
16) Anywhere if you are decent.
17) No clue, got the superior Verizon
18) $481 that sucks lol
19) Grant money is free money
20) Pretty sure you get an account with your FSU card
21) I am 100% sure there is a Bank of America ATM in the Union
22) Off Monroe its not too far is a Comfort Inn usually has solid prices if there isn’t a home game the day they stay.

Take a deep breath all shall be well you are in for the best time of your life

Why? Are you planning on testing how they deal with it? It’s illegal, don’t be stupid and do it. They take it seriously, just like any crimes are taken seriously.

For food, it’s either the Publix on Ocala (next to Heritage Grove) or the Winn-Dixie at the corner of Tharpe and High. Buses stop near both locations, although Publix is in a far better area, in my opinion.

The dorm deposit goes towards your first month’s housing. The tuition deposit will probably go towards your tuition.

Surrounding FSU? Not in particular. A short distance away, yes. Frenchtown is one area to avoid.

You pay them, and you get use of what they’re for. You pay the dorm fees to live in a dorm. You pay the meal plan so that you can eat at the two (technically 3) dining halls on campus.

Yes, that is an option.

Depends on if you are paying monthly or not. Paying monthly, your housing fees are due on the 1st of the month starting in July and going through October for Fall, and on the 1st of the month starting in January going through April for Spring.

For dining, the first payment is due I believe the first of August. I would suggest checking what the FSU Dining website says, because they like to change things on a regular basis.

No, but some professors may require a book that’s nearly impossible to purchase online. Some professors are actually the author of the textbook, or something similar. There’s also many classes that require you to buy a “package” set of the textbook and an online course code for homework or something, that can often be difficult to buy anywhere other than the FSU Bookstore.

The Seminole Express routes do make stops at some shopping plazas, but the routes are pretty limited. The Tallahassee Star Metro bus system though offers routes to a significant part of Tallahassee, including most of the shopping areas (and both of the major shopping malls in the city). [Transportation and Parking | Seminole Express](<a href=“Home | Transportation & Parking Services”>Home | Transportation & Parking Services)

It will. In fact, I’m a senior and I didn’t get a car until February of this past year. I survived nearly 3 years, you can survive one year without it (although yes, a car is significantly easier to get around the city in).

Pretty much anything and everything. If it’s a style, you’ll probably be able to find it.

http://housing.fsu.edu/housing/ungrad/2009%20Personalize%20PDFs/What%20to%20Bring%20to%20FSU.pdf</a></p>

Nothing in particular

Yes, it does.

It can get cold in the winter, just like it can get extremely hot in the summer. Coldest I think it’s gotten while I’ve been at FSU was during January 2010, when the temperature didn’t get above about 35 degrees for pretty much the first week of classes. Plan accordingly.

Honestly couldn’t tell you.

Honestly, no better or worse really than any other carrier. Verizon pretty much seems to reign supreme though, with AT&T second, and then Sprint and T-Mobile pretty much equal for third. There’s very little of a difference though honestly.

Couldn’t tell you why you were awarded that money. It’s automatically applied to your FSU fees and if anything’s left they will either deposit it into your SunTrust account or mail a check to you.

Depends on if you’re going to need access to any financial aid that you receive the day it’s disbursed each semester. If you will, then yes, you will need to sign up for a SunTrust account.

Yes, there’s a Bank of America ATM in the Union. There’s also a Wells Fargo and Regions ATM, and a plethora of SunTrust ATMs.

Depends on what they want. Pretty much any hotel will work if they just want somewhere to sleep. If they want something fancy, that’s a different story and entirely up to them.

Be aware that some Kindle textbooks don’t come with the online codes. You can usually buy them separately.

How does FSU police deal with underage college drinking ?
Don’t get caught.

Closest shopping area for food / prescription drugs ?
Publix, CVS

How will the tuition / dorm deposit be applied towards these fees ?
huh?

Any areas surrounding FSU to avoid primarily for safety concerns ?
French town. Pensacola St at night.

How does dorm fees work ? How do dining fees work ?
15$ to get a dorm card to borrow brooms, and stuff. Dining fees depend on your payment plan. If none, its 11 dollars, or 15?, for all you can eat or take out. No and.

Does FSU break-up these fees into monthly payments ?
I think only for housing, you have to email them if you didn’t respond to pay it as so when you received your housing letter.

When are the first payments sent out ?
2nd week of classes for finaid disbursement.

Do FSU professors care if required textbooks are purchased online ?
Nope. Some don’t even use them, even though they recommend to. Then again, it depends on the professor. I usually wait a week or two after class starts. If I were to buy them, I’ll buy them super early online for cheaper prices.

Do FSU sponsored buses take students off-campus for shopping ?
FSU bus system takes you to the Walmart on west Tennessee. The Tallahassee bus, which is free with FSU students I think, will take you about anywhere. Still, make friends.

I will have no car on campus first year, will my bicycle/bus/taxi do ?
Yep, and so will friends.

What is a “typically” worn by freshman living on campus ?
FSU shirts for the first few days, then polo shirts and khakis for their FRAT rush, then frat tanks. Normal person, a t-shirt and shorts, depending on where they are from.

What do I need to purchase before arriving at FSU for on campus living ?
Bed sheets, flip flops for showers. Headphones.

I believe I will be housed @ Broward, any suggestions / any concerns ?
Make friends.

Does the unlimited food plan allow me to use the “football dining room” ?
Only on fridays.

How is the weather during winter ? Do I need to bring heavy clothes ?
Cool, chilly, cold, super cold, for a month or two. Don’t over due the heavy, sweaters are fine.

Which areas to safely long-board ?
Anywhere if you are good.

How does T-mobile work on campus ?
It works

Financial aid awarded me a $ 481 grant each semester -How do I receive this money and why was I awarded this money?
It’s automatically pays for stuff you didn’t pay in your account fees, if it is all paid, and there are any left over, it goes to the suntrust account, or a check, depends on what you select via blackboard. And don’t ask why, just smile and take it. You’ll need it.

Do I need to sign-up for the Suntrust bankcard ?
For financial aid, yes.

Will my Bank Of America ATM work on campus ?
ATM card? There are several ATM machines on campus, at the stadium, bills books, and the union. As for a Bofa debit, yes.

Which hotels suggested for parents to use when they visit me?
Any.

Pasbal i respect your opinions because you are a guru on these forums, but lets be honest. Telling a college freshman attending FSU not to drink underage, is like telling a new puppy not to crap on your carpets.

Thank You

I achieved a 5 on my AP Calculus, do I still take MAC2311 ?

AB or BC. Do you still have to take a calculus class for your major? If so, how do you feel about your level of understanding for the class? Calculus AB covers MAC2311 and BC covers 2312. I got a 4 on the AB exam, but didn’t feel comfortable skipping calc II. I retook 2311, and got one of the easiest A’s of my life. Still glad I retook the class though. That’s ultimately your call. You don’t have to, but many do.

I achieved a 5 on my AP Physics, do I still take PHY2048C ?

Guessing it’s the same as above, but I don’t know. For information on AP credits transferring to classes: [FSU Admissions | Credit | AP Credit](<a href=“FSU Admissions | Error 404 page not found”>FSU Admissions | Credit | AP Credit)

Is ENC1101 the first level English class ?

Yes.

As a “POSSIBLE” Physics major, do I take PHY1090 ?

That’s an adviser question. If it doesn’t count towards your physics major and isn’t a required pre-req, I’d suggest waiting so you don’t waste your time/money with it. If you decide not to do a science major, you can always take some easier science classes like Intro Geology or Baby Bio (easiest A ever).

Which Liberal Studies class recommended ?

Baby Bio (but you’re probably not going to need that as a physics major)

Multicultural Film (I never took it, but I’ve heard it’s easy and satisfies a lot of requirements)

PHI2100 – Critical Thinking (Take with Bishop. If you go to class, it’s not difficult, but I think everybody should have to take this class)

Any freshman Professors to avoid ?

I have had very few professors that I did not like. Can’t think of any freshman year that I had a problem with.

Where / what is French town ? Why avoid ?

Just North of Tennessee Street. It’s very ghetto.

Will the FSU / Tallahassee cops harass skaters ?

No.

Will the Wellness Center accept Ave-Med Insurance ?

Not sure.

How much medical treatment will the Wellness Center provide ?

Not sure.

Is the Circular Sheraton Hotel up and running yet ?

It wasn’t when I left for Summer, but looked like it was getting very close to completion.

Were are the junk-food restaurants located near off-campus ?

Tennessee Street just across from the far west side of campus. Mr. Roboto’s Jimmy Johns, Moes, Burger King, Dominos, and Papa Johns just to name a few. Hip Hop Chicken and Fish, owned by T-Pain, is a little further west on Tennessee street and awesome.

Then on Call and Tennessee (also just off the west side of campus, but about a 7 minute walk from the edge of campus), we have Jersey Mike’s, Yogurt Mountain, and Chipotle.

As a gamer, will the internet connection in the dorm be okay ?

Should be, but it’s you guys that are slowing the connection down for the rest of us. Sometimes it’s faster than others.

Is there an internet cap in the dorm rooms ?

I don’t believe so.

As an onion-router, will FSU investigate / punish ?

As in wireless router? They are not allowed.

Is it safe to be out late at night on campus ?

You’ll get a fair share of alerts about things that happen on campus. I have never had a problem, nor felt unsafe, walking across campus late at night. I’d say the campus is very safe, and overall, FSUPD does a great job.

I know plenty of people Sid that don’t drink alcohol (myself included). Sure, lots of people drink underage- and not just at FSU- but I’m not going to advocate that anyone try and find out what the FSU police thinks about underage drinking. They take it seriously, and if you’re caught drinking underage there are repercussions. If it’s significant enough, you can be disciplined by the University as well. If you don’t want to find out what the FSU Police think about underage drinking, there’s really one main option- don’t drink. And if you’re going to drink, don’t be stupid.

If you get credit for a class from your AP score, you don’t need to take that course. With Physics though, that’s something that you might want to talk to your advisor about.

Yes, it is. It’s required to take your first semester as well, unless you already have credit for it.

[The Florida State University](http://www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/physics.htm)
PHY1090 is required for the Physics major, so I would say yes, you do take it. However, I would definitely talk to your advisor, who you will meet at Orientation.

You have to take multiple liberal studies classes. I would honestly talk to your advisor about what requirements you still need to fill, and what classes would fit those requirements. One class that is often recommended because it fills multiple Liberal Studies requirements is CLT3378 Ancient Mythology.

Not really.

It’s an area north of the FSU campus. It’s a “questionable” neighborhood known for higher crime rates than usual.

Only if you’re breaking the law or doing something stupid.

It will mostly depend on what the insurance covers, not what plan it is. You have to verify that your health insurance plan meets certain requirements as listed by FSU, or else you have to purchase the FSU Health Insurance plan.
[Thagard Student Health Center](http://www.tshc.fsu.edu/)

Thagard lists what they provide on their Appointments page:
[Thagard: Appointments](http://www.tshc.fsu.edu/appointments.html)

The hotel on Tennessee? It wasn’t a month ago at the end of the semester. It might be now, but I’m not sure. I would probably doubt it though.

On the north side of campus there’s a McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Whataburger, and other restaurants right on Tennessee Street. There’s a Checker’s a couple blocks south of campus.

It will depend. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It will all be dependent upon how many people are using the internet at the same time. I’ve never had it impact my gaming, but I have noticed times where the network was bogged down.

Not that I’ve ever discovered, but I am sure that if you are bogging the network down by using too much bandwidth, the university will have no hesitation in contacting you.

Routers aren’t allowed.

No more or less safe really than being out late at night anywhere else. Just don’t be stupid, don’t make yourself an easy target, and take the necessary precautions.
Never had an issue walking around campus at night, but I also haven’t had issues anywhere else. But that’s not to say that you won’t have any problems.

Unless it has recently changed, the Figg player’s dining room is only open to non-athletes for lunch. And, yes, fried chicken fridays are awesome.

The majority of these questions can be answered on FSU’s website if you just look. For someone who got a 5 on AP Calc and Physics, that shouldn’t be too hard for you.

Yeah, Figg is only open like 11-1 for non-athletes. The full schedule though is on the FSU Campus Dish website, and it might be different.

On fried chicken Fridays at the Figg athletic dining hall, don’t jump into the serving line ahead of any football players unless you are really big, really fast, really stupid, or really good looking!

Tallalassie neglects to mention that the really good looking part should be limited to females lolol

Lol at the people who are clueless as to what onion-routing is… Watch Shrek y’all, onions have layers!=P

I got onion routing confused with tomato, the custom firmware you can run on routers. Heh.

Considering that onion routing attempts to conceal what you are doing, I would bet that the actions that would warrant doing so wouldn’t be allowed. If you need to conceal what you’re doing on FSU’s network, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.

Considering that they can track anything you do back to either your FSUID (for WiFi) or your ethernet port (on the FSU ResNet), I’m sure that the first time you were caught concealing what you were doing they’d probably be unhappy. They do actively monitor the network.

I’m wondering what sort of messages a college student has to send that are so important and confidential as to warrant the use of onion-routing, lol. =P
