Please help a stressed out junior for NYU Stern!! I will respond!!

Hi guys, I am currently a junior and I thought that it would be helpful for me if I start thinking about my future right now. I want to know where I am headed and what I can do to improve.

So far, I have only been an average student. I got 3 Bs freshman year, 1 B sophomore year. At the end of this year, I am projected to have 2 Bs. This will result in an unweighted GPA of 3.69, and a weighted GPA of 4.2 (overall). By the end of high school, I will have taken 5 APs and 10 honors courses. I am from a very competitive public high school in NJ so there are a lot of people smarter than me, and we dont have class rank.

I am worried my average grades will not get me into my first choice college (NYU Stern, which has become very competitive). I have decent extracurriculars (four school clubs, some volunteering hours, musical instrument), but I think they are only generic at best and nothing that really stands out. I have been preparing a lot for the SAT, so I expect a 2200+. And I will take SAT IIs in math level 2, bio, and us history.
So how are my chances if I apply ED next year to NYU Stern with the above credentials?

and I had some questions
Can I apply to CAS and Stern and say that I want to double major in Economics/Math at CAS and Finance at Stern?

If I do this, if they reject me at Stern next year, would they still let me go to CAS since I also will have applied there as an Economics/Math major?

They will only let you apply to one college. If you are dead set on NYU, apply CAS. You are more likely to get in there. If you are dead set on finance apply stern. You could go to CAS and Major in math and minor in pre business studies.

Would I be considered a "Stern student" if I major in math/econ at CAS and minor in prebusiness studies? Will that look as good as majoring in finance at Stern when I apply for jobs?

Well, no. You wouldn't be considered a Stern student since you didn't go to stern. Maybe it won't look as good, but either way if you really want to go to NYU I would go for CAS if you don't think you can make it into Stern.

I think students who minor in prebusiness at CAS take classes at Stern. Thats why I wanted to know if I would still be considered a legitimate Stern student by minoring in prebusiness.

Will going to CAS and majoring in econ/math with a minor in prebusiness be as good as a Stern student for getting jobs?

why not just apply to stern.

username101: I see what you mean, yeah I think you do take some classes at Stern.

stephenn: Stern is very selective, and username101 may feel for the sake of not missing out on NYU, applying to CAS would give him a better chance and still let him work in the field he wants. (For the most part).

i know stern is more selective.... but if you want stern, then go for stern.. an NYU experience isn't worth blowing money on not being happy (even though some say that that IS the nyu experience)

True, but if I were him and I thought I may not make it into Stern, I wouldn't risk it. NYU would be a fun time wether or not he was in Stern or CAS. (at least in my opinion.)

i think it looks good even for stern
and stern is more famous than CAS
but if you would just want to go to NYU, be safe and apply CAS

Actually I would prefer the Stern experience over just NYU. I think I will just apply to Stern...theres a lot of other good colleges I can go to if I dont get in.

yea..
but i think you have a good shot

I don't blame you username101. College is something you wouldn't want to "kind of" like, so if it's Stern or nothing I would apply to Stern.
