Please help me choose a dorm

I'd really appreciate if some of you can give me unbiased recommendations for which dorm fits me the best. I'll just try and give as much relevant info about myself as possible, and if anyone needs more info, just ask for it.

First off, as of right now I don't drink and I'm not into the party scene. I guess that could change, but that's as of right now. Going along with that, I'm not inclined towards any drugs. I feel like I might feel uncomfortable if a dorm is dominated by these things. I'm an introvert who does enjoy socializing, just not around these things. I still would like to go downtown, hang out, etc.

Second off, the outside looks of a dorm don't matter to me. I prefer a single.

Thirdly, I don't really want a huge group of acquaintances but rather a tight-knit group of friends. For me, I want to be able to discuss things from movies, watcheBulls basketball playoffs start soon, 2012 NBA champs), and not shy away from video games or literature like Game of Thrones. Obviously, I have a huge variety of interests, but I don't know how you'd classify me.

Finally, other random stuff. I do work out every day right now, and I want to continue in college. Location could play a role here. I'm not extremely athletic, but I still enjoy playing sports like basketball. I'm curious to see how entertaining Scav can be also.

I just really could use some recommendations because I can't seem to choose 3 dorms for my housing application. Also, quick question for current students, how important is location for you guys?

Sorry for the huge post. I just tried to cover all my bases.

Woah, you and I sound like the same person!!! I’m not a partier/ drinker/ substance user, consider myself an introvert (who LOVES the city), prefer singles, am a sports and movies fan, want a tight-knit group of friends, and plan on going to the gym a lot… ← me in a nutshell!

I’m an incoming first-year just like you, so I won’t be much of a help (actually I doubt I’ll be any help since I really just picked my dorms on only one important criterion). But I decided to choose Max mainly because

1) It’s very conveniently located (my biggest thing)
2) I’m picky with bathrooms so I like the private bathrooms at Max
3) I love how new it is and that the showers don’t “explode brown sludge” (they do at another dorm apparently…) Shout-out to HonorsCentuar!
4) There’s a giant Henry Moore sculpture in front of it :D

I don’t know much about the social life at Max since I’ve never actually lived there, but I have heard that it offers more of a traditional college dorm experience. I’m guessing this means that it will have more parties than say, BJ. However, the walls are supposed to be pretty soundproof (haha) and no one’s making me drink/party, so I think I should be fine. Good luck!

Max P seems very large, but I do like it’s location. What were your other 2 preferences?

senoritapipita, you and I sound like the same person as well (including the fact that I also choose Max as my forst choice lol)!

My other two picks were Snitchcock and Pierce, but the biggest thing that I looked for in choosing my dorms was how conveniently located they are. So even though there were things that I wasn’t too sure about (like the bathrooms at Pierce…) I decided to put location above everything else.

Xialiyu: hopefully we both get Max! It’s sounds like we’d get along great :)

Well I know I am too late for Snell. Good thing is I guess there will be people like me in every dorm, but I still would like some more opinions. I might choose Max P, but I currently have B-J as my first choice. Any opinions on that?

And is there other dorms I should look into?

Thanks in advance.

If you prefer to have a guaranteed single, and you like to use the gym every day, you ought to think about Maclean, which is all-singles and a half-block from the main gym (vs. BJ, which is half a mile or a bus ride away). All of the smaller dorms, including Maclean, have somewhat weird reputations which, as far as I can tell, are completely unjustified, and merely reflect the fact that about 85% of the first years live in one of the five largest dorms.

Maclean is especially unpopular because it’s literally off the map – most university maps cut off at 55th Street on the north side of campus, and Maclean is a half block north of 55th. So many people have no idea where it is. And it has (horrors!) the dreaded communal bathrooms (single-sex, cleaned by the maintenance staff, so a number of positives there). It’s perfectly nice, and a good option for gym-rats who want sleeping/studying space that can be private if they close the door.

Broadview is all singles with private bathrooms.

Max or Pierce have the best location near the Gym and closeish to campus…by the way Pierce is fixed. I had no issues when I stayed overnight. Pierce is much smaller and tight knit houses but the dorms aren’t as nice as Max.

BJ looks great other than its location.
