I have had a one year break since graduating from high school, and was wondering if anybody could chance me and share some opinions about my stats:) I'm really paranoid about my chances because I've worked really hard but decisions seem somewhat unpredictable.

Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to talking with you guys :) Thanks!

If you’re interested in Columbia, I would get in touch with admissions and confirm that GS is the right place for you. I once heard anecdotal evidence that you need a break in education of OVER 1 year. That is, if you do a single gap year after graduating high school, you are still eligible to apply to CC, but anything more, you’re not. I cannot confirm this but it is worth looking into.

@fisherman93 - I hope you are joking Thank you for reading and posting though!! :)

@MusaeumClausum Thank you for your post! I have actually contacted them, and confirmed that I am indeed eligible. Apparently, the requirement is “at least 1 year.” Do you think I have a chance, though?

Yes you are very competitive. I had similar stats with a slightly lower GPA and got in for a second degree which is more competitive than for first timers. You should apply to all the Ivys as you may get more competitive aid in some of the traditional programs if you get in.

Certainly your academic achievements are substantial, which would be a benefit to your application. However, GS looks at applicants very holistically. You’re going to have to convince them that GS, specifically, is right for you. And if there’s any chance that you could be a more traditional route, then you might have your work cut out for you in that regard.

I do not mean to be discouraging. Certainly your presence would be welcome at GS. However, it would absolutely behoove you to investigate your traditional program options before putting all your eggs in the GS basket, as the school, while wonderful, is incredibly expensive and financial aid is woefully inadequate. Being only 1 year out of HS, your academic success could put you in the position to receive great financial aid at a traditional college. Do not overlook those possibilities!

I’m certainly not an expert, but I agree that if your gap is only a year you may consider more traditional programs. That’s a pretty competitive resume for a traditional student (although obviously at the Ivy’s they have hundreds of kids just like it).

I think for GS who you are and what you did during your time off will matter quite a lot. As in, why GS specifically?

When a thread gets a new post, it gets “bumped” up to the top of the list of a forum’s main page. Some people will bump posts to keep their profile up - often assuming that they’ll be able to get more or better looks.

However, there’s a 10 character minimum when posting on CC. So, just writing “bump” isn’t sufficient. “Bump 10 char” is just long enough that it satisfies that criterion.
