**Please Help!** Scheduling Problems!

Hi guys. I’m really stressed out right now about my whole scheduling situation. This is basically a little bit of ranting along with asking for advice.

My counselor is a BUTTHEAD. I’m in eighth grade, I scheduled an appointment with him, and he basically just “shunned” whatever I had to say and sent me on my merry little way within 5 minutes. Imma be stuck with him. For four years. :’( My whole thing was that I wanted to take Honors US History 1, typically a sophomore class, in freshman year so that I could take AP Econ in sophomore year in place of history, because my elective slots are filled. Unfortunately, this bleep was just like, “Uh no, you can’t do that.”
Me: Why?
Him: “It’s a sophomore class. Some schools are different. Some do different things though.”
Me in my mind: I didn’t ask about other schools, you incompetent BLEEEEEEEEP Plus, that’s not a satisfactory answer.
Me: S

It may be an actual problem with grade-level prerequisites. My school has things like that.

Actually, it being a sophomore class is a perfectly acceptable reason. Most high schools will not make exceptions to courses that are grade-level specific. Sorry, but that’s just the way it works. There is a natural progression of courses and you have to follow it.

Quite frankly, your reaction to his reply (when your request was actually quite inappropriate) is a little alarming. You come off as entitled and a little arrogant IMHO (which I hope isn’t true irl). What makes you so special that you don’t have to follow the rules?

@guineagirl96‌
I apologize for coming off that way, it’s just that I felt as though his reasons were lacking. “That’s just how it is” seems blah when compared to, “the workload is too hard for a freshman to handle”. You know what I mean? When I asked for help and stuff with rearranging the plan, he just ignored me and talked about how my request was not possible. I mean he is my counselor, after all. The thing that I was confused about was that there is no history class in freshman year, and I could just take the sophomore one to get rid of it so I can take other required classes. (the part that i didn’t get to because I left this post for awhile before remembering to edit, sorry) Once again, I apologize as coming off as arrogant, :frowning: and I thank you for your honesty. :slight_smile:

You’ve known since at least November that taking USH as a freshman was not a possibility. Move on. There are some classes that schools like all students in a certain grade to take together. Maybe it’s a bonding experience, IDK. In most schools, USH is one of them. Pick your battles; this is not one of them.

If there’s no history freshman year, then why can’t you take AP Econ freshman year in its place (where you were planning on taking US)? Is that grade-level restricted too? I would take a good look at the high school course catalog, which should be online and pay attention to grade-level restrictions, and see if you can come up with a four-year plan taking into account when classes are offered, which you can then stick to.

My high school had no history class freshman year either because we had a STEM core class in its place. We still had to take four history classes, though. I took the extra class in summer school, some people took it online. These are other options you can look into, too, depending on your school’s rules and requirements.

@guineagirl96 Freshman aren’t allowed to take APs. There’s a LOT of grade restriction at the school. :frowning: Yeah, I’m looking into self-studying. Or community colleges. Idk. thanks though

At the end of the day, if classes are restricted, your counselor couldn’t do anything about it, even if he wanted to.

^^^^

In the long run, this rule isn’t going to harm you in any way. Thinking about my own school’s history requirements, it makes no sense why I would want to skip to Civics and Economics before senior year when it’s a senior class. It’s just the way things are.

I’m sure if you really want to take AP Economics, you’ll find a way to fit it in or else they wouldn’t offer the class.

It is a little strange that your school offers no freshman history class, but hey, regulations are regulations. It really is not a big deal at all.

Good luck!

@purplerflower I understand. Thanks :slight_smile:

@MissSuzyQ Thanks. That really helped- would you mind if I PM you?

@JustinDaMan1141‌ Sure! PM away!
