PLEASE HELP! Why does USF's 7 Year BS/MD program Look So Easy?

So, I'm looking at this program at USF, and this is probably my top choice because I'll be able to stay close to home and help out the fam. Butm I'm looking at their requirements, and it just seems TOO easy. 7 Yr. Medical Program - USF Honors College

An SAT of 1350 (verbal and quantitative) or a combined ACT of 30 is required for students who wish to enter the 7 Year BS/MD program

And you need to have a 3.60 GPA in college.

Am I missing something here?

Also, is there a chance that even if you do complete all of these requirements, you will be rejected from the program and their medical school via the 7 year program?

Bump…Can anyone give me insight or anything that would tell me more about this program?

Yes, you did miss something. Requirements are irrelevant, check the stats of accepted.

^As in how many students who applied to this program were accepted into USF’s medical school?

^No, what were GPA and SAT/ACT of accepted applicants.

The posted SAT and ACT scores are just a minimum. I dont know this particular program but the average scores of accepted students are generally A LOT higher than the minimum.

Most of this programs are very difficult to get in and require interviews. You will need a lot more than GPA and SAT. Class rank (top 10 % the higher the better). ECs are also important, specially if related to the field.

^Many programs will not accept even #1 in a class, forget top 10%. And I am talking about pre-interview rejection. However, I do not know specifics of this program.

let me give you an example, uconn bs/md, the one i am attending, requires 3.5 gpa and 1350 sat in hs, EVERYONE except me I think had at least 1400 sat and 3.8 gpa, idk how i got in but they liked me

Its not a “real” BS/MD program though:

"Eligible student may follow the track during their first year of undergraduate enrollment. By a specified date at the end of the first year, students will submit a declaration of intent to formally join the BS/MD program.

Students who meet all specified benchmarks will officially apply to the Morsani College of Medicine during the summer between their second and third undergraduate years."

And, so, that’s why I don’t think the same ideas and facts as other bsmd programs do not apply here. From what I can tell, as long as you complete the requirements, you’ll be accepted. I’m waiting for a reply to my e-mail about this, but until then, does anyone know if that’s true, or if this is a program even worth looking into?

Hello!

I am currently in the USF 7-year program. I am finishing my 2nd semester of my 2nd year in undergrad and I will be applying the USF Morsani College of Medicine this summer.

The program will not be easy for anyone after my year to be in the 7-year program. Because the 2015 MCAT requires so many more classes (psychology and sociology and biochem) to be ready for the MCAT, your first 2 years of undergrad will be SO PACKED with sciences every single semester it will be EXTREMELY difficult to stay in the program.

For example, I had mainly 2 sciences and supplement honors college courses to take every semester. Challenging but not bad. I maintained 4.0. However, 1st semester of my 2nd year, I had 3 sciences : physics 2, orgo 1, and anatomy & physiology. on top of the HARDEST honors course of the entire program (biomedical ethics with dr. marshall). Most of my fellow students got Bs this semester from the honors course and struggles in orgo 1.

My first two semesters and my summer semester were not bad, but challenging. The semester i just described was rough.

For anyone after my year, every. single. semester. will be a rough semester. Expect 3 sciences almost every semester with those difficult orgo 1 and 2 and biochem.

The program now is hard for some people to maintain over 3.7GPA but the 2015 MCAT 7-year will be almost impossible (in my honest opinion). There will be higher success with the 4 year track with USF Honors.

USF Honors will pretty much set you up to get into USF Morsani College of Medicine! They give you so many connections and resources~ If you are USF Honors I highly recommend their undergrad program to get into medical college :)

Cheers!

Taketeri, I am trying to gef into that program and want to know my chances, would you mind posting your stats??

I won’t reveal my position at USF but I’ll just say that I’m extremely familiar with the Honors College and this program. As long as you meet the SAT and GPA requirements, you will be able to declare intent to join the 7 year med track in Spring of your first year in the Honors College. As long as you meet the GPA and MCAT requirements, you will be extremely likely to be accepted into the MD program. I’ve only heard of a couple of students that entirely blew their interview and missed the boat.
