USF 7 Year Medical Program??? Please read...

I'm a senior in high school and have been accepted to UF,UM,USF Honors, UCF Honors, and some colleges up North (bryn mawr, smith, cornell, columbia (mainly because my mother, father went there)) which I have decided are too expensive.

Does anyone know about USF's 7 year medical program? How good is USF School of Medicine and the program? What are your experiences? Would it be better to attend that program or attend a first tier school such as UM or UF and try applying for other medical schools? Any advice would be appreciated.

If it helps, I'm asian and have good grades (4.4 weighted, 3.98 unweighted), good SAT, good extracurriculars etc...

Any experiences with USF Medical Program???

The answer is quite simple. If you can get into the USF 7 year program its a no-brainer, go there.

piano- Ask how many students actually make it through the program to the medical school. This is important because there are bench marks you must meet and you want to know how many students are dropped. If you choose USF's program it is a good idea to be aware of this and know exactly what you are getting yourself into.

I too was accepted to USF and applied there specifically for the program. They seem to have pretty stringent requirements and I wanted to know what percentage of applicants actually made it too.

Ask the Dean of the program. They would know the stats.

Do you know which field you wish to pursue? Primary Care (Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, etc.) or Specialty Medicine which tends to be more competitive (Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, etc.)?

Look at USF's prior match lists (below are 2 years worth) to see how well USF students match into fields you are interested in:

2008: http://health.usf.edu/nocms/publicaffairs/now/matchlist2008.pdf
2007: http://health.usf.edu/nocms/publicaffairs/match1a_2007.pdf

It's also dependent on how many students go for that field, but it also shows you the variety of fields students at the school tend to go for (more primary care based vs. more subspecialties).

I have heard there is a high drop out rate for this program- as well as all the 7 yr med programs feeding into USF Med. The match list for any med school can be amazing but it only matters if you are in/get in that medical school. First you need to see if you can get through the undergrad part. Good Luck with your decision!

My son was accepted to the USF Honors program and is interested in pursuing the BS/MD path. The GPA requirement in undergrad increases every year. According to admissions and I think their website, if one is accepted to the Honors program, they are automatically eligible for the BS/MD program beginning in 2009. So, if you're in Honors, you're in! Admissions said that the first three years are undergrad classes. The senior year begins the MD program provided the GPA requirements have been met and a score of at least 30 on the MCAT was obtained.

Since my son has been offered a full 4 year scholarship, I wondered what would happen to the funds of the 4th year since they are no longer classified as undergraduate at that point. I was told that those with scholarships would receive the undergraduate scholarship amount for the year and any difference would have to paid by loans or other means.

Combined BS/MD Program:

Effective Fall 2009

Eligible USF students who have been admitted to the Honors College and are interested in attending medical school have an opportunity to receive admission to USF’s College of Medicine (COM) and complete a medical degree in seven years, provided that the student continues to meet all the requirements of the program. The first three years of study will be done at the Honors College at USF and the fourth year will be done at USF College of Medicine as part of the first year of medical school. A Bachelor’s Degree will be conferred following successful completion of the Honors College requirements (typically after the fourth year of study). The Doctor of Medicine Degree will be conferred after the successful completion of the program.
Students applying for this accelerated program typically select the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) major in order to receive a Baccalaureate Degree.

The Honors College will provide oversight of the student’s progress in meeting Honors requirements and will coordinate overall completion of the first three years of the program.
Hey,
Im just about done with my second year in the program and I think its worth it. If you really want to be a doctor than you should go for it.

And anyone in the honors college can apply but they only take 30ish kids a year. My year had 33 kids but I think we are down to 15-20. From what I have gathered from people i know ahead of me in the program, 5-10 of the people accepted into the 7-year typically make it into medical school.

The requirements aren’t too bad and ae about the average for anyone trying to get into Medical school. I have a 3.95 GPA right now and did all the volunteer/shadowing/Letters. I’m researching in a great lab. All I got left is the MCAT

If you have any questions, feel free to ask

How good a program is it if 20-25 out of 30 people in the program do not get to the medical school.

Just how are they picking the 30 finalists?

congrats for getting into the program.
My son has just joined as a freshman at usf honors. What is the freshman year gpa requirement to get into the program?
What was your freshman gpa?

U need to apply to USF program in high school.

My son was just admitted to USF. He qualifies for the honors program but how/when will we know if he is being invited?

I have a couple of questions about this program. The first one is, all the kids that are accepted into USF Honors college are eligible to participate in this program or is there any other criteria? The second one, I heard that there is a formal interview after successfully fulfilled all the requirements. So, is there any chance for elimination during interview process? The last one is, generally how many kids are accepted into this 7 year med program?

Your responses are highly appreciated.

You apply to the program. Hopefully get an interview. Get an offer to attend the program.

Once attending you must follow program requirements. If you fail to meet benchmarks you are removed from the program.

I have heard that ~20% make it to the med school part.

Does anyone know the average stats for usf honors? And what are the benefits? I’m from Cali. Asian with 4.5 weighted and 2300. With couple 800 sat 2’s. Can anyone predict what sort of scholarship I can get and if I can make the honors college at all. I’m trying to aim for the bs/md program and from the % making to med school part anyone know the rough figure?
