Please review me for transfer

Hi everyone,

I've been looking at the forums ever since deciding on a school for undergrad and i'd like some advice on a transfer scenario

I am completely satisfied with the social setting at my current small liberal arts college in CA, however, the academics are not interesting to me. Getting good grades is not necessarily a matter of pushing yourself, as much as it is a matter of sucking up to the teacher and molding your work to what they like to see most. I want more of a challenge as well as more opportunities with job recruiting after school.

I would appreciate your thoughts on my chances at a transfer and any additional schools that would be a good fit for me. I am a bit worried that my high school stats will hinder my transfer despite a solid college performance.

Goal: Transfer from St. Mary's College CA to Northeastern University (bus ad major)

My ideal school is a mid-large university in the greater Boston Area

High School info:

3.2 unweighted GPA
tough course load, honors/ AP classes throughout high school
1820 SAT
Several leadership roles and varsity sports

College info:

Incoming Sophomore
One full year completed
current GPA: 3.675
Deans list both semesters
Business Administration Major, marketing concentration
Vice President of American Marketing Association on campus
Just completed an internship with a winery as a marketing intern
20 volunteer hours a month at the local food bank

Please let me know if you need any more information about my background to provide a better evaluation.

Thanks,

Matt

no offense, but i don’t think you’ll be able to use needing more academic rigor as a solid reason for transferring without a 3.8+. if it’s really as easy as you make it sound, then you should have a sky-high gpa. yours is definitely solid, but doesn’t live up to what you’re saying about the academics at your school, so maybe don’t say that
that said, i don’t think you’ll have any problems getting into northeastern even if you don’t mention that. have you considered BU, tufts, or BC? tufts and BC will be a bit of a reach, but you might as well try

Thanks for the reply, and true, unless I am pulling a 4.0 it seems unlikely that I am missing out on much academically. I think I am most frustrated by extreme bias shown by teachers to certain students. This year, that bias helped me quite a bit, but hurt a lot of my friends.

As far as transferring from 4 year => 4 year schools go, can anyone offer specific advice? It seems that colleges look at a transfer from a cc to 4 year quite differently than the other situation.

Thanks,

Matt

i think it’s easier for CC students because they automatically have a really good reason for wanting to transfer (they want their bachelors instead of an associates). so i think you need to both show why you want to leave without bashing your school and prove that you need to go to your prospective new school to fulfill your goals.
