Topic: Can success be disastrous?

Success, in most peoples opinion, represents glory, happiness, and wealth. However, success has another side of definition, which can be described as disastrous that one has never expected. The loss of Titanic can be seen as a catastrophe which emerged from success: the worship to the great luxury ship and ignoring the problems of the material resulting in the tragic sinking of this great liner. Another example allows us to be aware of the strong power of the press, which disturbed the tranquil life of a plain family after they had become the parents of quintuplets.

The colossal ship, Titanic, while sailing across the North Atlantic, encountered a huge iceberg which was about 100 feet in height. The ship was lucky enough to avoid a direct collision, yet inevitably flooded five of its sixteen watertight compartments. The ship began to sink, and the captain reluctantly acclaimed to abandon it. What is worse, the lack of lifeboat led over one thousand people to death. The Titanic was absolutely a great milestone in the history, judging by its great capacity, huge size, and amazing recreational facilities. It was a dream shared by millions of people who want to take a trip on Titanic, so that no one would consider the problems of safety, for the ship was regarded as unsinkable. Moreover, a recent study shows that the sinking of Titanic is not merely because of the collision to the iceberg; the main reason is the material--mainly iron--was not tight enough, and with the impact of the iceberg, made the ship to be destroyed easily. The great success made people all fell into the illusion of the Titanic, while they failed to inspect every detail.

Success also exerts calamitous influence on an unknown family. After they abruptly became the parents of quintuplets, their reports and photos blot out the sky and cover up the earth. Their rise to fame was fairly swift. They acquired presents from millions of manufacturers who wished to advertise their product, and their house turned to be a brilliant villa. They had to hire lawyers to be spokesmen for the family and took part in press conferences one by one. The family were labeled victims of commercialization, and the parents had to pay for the fame. Accordingly, the five unsophisticated babies had been regarded as commercial wares.

All the evidences above justify the sound conclusion that after going too far, things will turn around. It is success that brings us numerous fame, money, and power; it is also success that accompanies disastrous facets. While a pool of people are trying to thrust themselves to the group of success, the people who had been successful are afflicted by the noisy life they are leading. Though no easy solutions could be guaranteed to solve the problem that eradicating the bad consequences which success brings, the public awareness of viewing the essential meaning of success might be helpful.
