I’m thinking about applying to PLME. I know its very hard to get into, so I definitely won’t be asking anyone to chance me.

Do you know anyone who has gotten into PLME without volunteering at a hospital? I’ve done research at a lab and worked at a nursing home (I know that doesn’t sound like much, but I really, really bonded with the residents and I feel like I learned a lot of lessons that can be applied to patient care). I was never able to volunteer at a hospital, though. Would that rule me out automatically?

absolutely not! you’re other ECs are clearly medical related. If you didn’t volutneer AND you didn’t research or work at a nursing home… THEN we might have a problem.

Umm…I want to know if i’m completely unqualified since I haven’t don’t any volunteering at a hospital or anything. However, I’ve participated in Relay for Life for two years and have helped raise thousands of dollars towards cancer research. Will that help at all even though i have no volunteering experience??

relay for life is just a fundraising event. Its not YOU that’s actually participating in this research etc. Although this event definately shows that you are altruistic, it doesn’t help much as a medical related EC

Honestly I feel as though…if you want to be a doctor and you haven’t done research, or stepped into a hospital to shadow or volunteer…the adcom at ANY med program is gonna have trouble deciding that you’ve shown enough interest in the medical field. Basically…if you wanna be doctor, why haven’t you done anything in HS to pursue that.
It’s worth a shot…but I think that many of the top-tier programs will not even consider you, regardless of amazing stats and EC(if not medical related)

no unfortunately. I’ve worked at CVS and my school office so i can have money to buy books and stuff for school so i haven’t really had time to volunteer. Is there still time for me to do something before i apply? Seriously though, i’ve been considering medicine for some time now but i haven’t had my heart completely and totally set on it since i was born like some people. My interest in biology and my desire to help people have been the deciding factors in my decision to study medicine. My ultimate goal is to start a clinic in Haiti, but other factors have hindered me from doing much with this newfound desire. Is that so wrong?

I doubt you have time to do any significant volunteering at a hospital…but don’t worry. You have a legitimate reason, make sure you explain it to them. I’m sure they’ll understand.

Good luck - I hope you start that clinic one day!

if you want to be a doctor you don’t have to apply plme either; a lot of students are pre-med at brown without being in the program. if you’re not absolutely, definitely, 100% set on being a doctor, give yourself time to explore other areas and subjects before you decide to lock yourself in to a medical career.
