Pls Chance CSU East Bay, Stanislaus, Bakersfield, Dominguez Hills - Pre-Nursing, F2021, OOS, 2.8 GPA

My kid is interested in pre-nursing at a 4yr college. GPA is 2.8 and SAT is 900. Does my kid stand a chance at getting into CSU East Bay, Stanislaus, Bakersfield, or Dominguez Hills? We’re OOS. Thank you.

Very slim chance at being admitted for a “pre-nursing program” since the minimum CSU GPA required for Out of state applicants is 3.0 for Fall 2021 and test scores will not be considered.

From the Cal state apply website:

** * Non-California residents may be eligible for admission to the CSU by earning a 3.00 or greater “a-g" GPA along with other supplemental factors utilized by the individual campus, including those outlined by impacted campuses and programs.

Any non-California high school graduate or non-resident of California earning a GPA between 2.47 and 2.99 may be evaluated for admission based upon supplemental factors such as number of courses exceeding minimum “a-g” requirements, household income, extracurricular involvement, and other available information that would inform the campus admission decision. Each CSU campus will determine the supplemental factors used with GPA to determine eligibility in these cases and communicate these criteria publicly for prospective students.**

“Pre-Nursing” programs are impacted at all Cal states so this means there are more qualified applicants than spots available making them all highly competitive.

Also want to expand on my comment about the Pre-Nursing programs.

CSU Dominguez Hills does not have a “pre-nursing” program only a RN to BSN program for transfers. Students will get an AA (usually at a community college) and take the RN licensing exam then transfer into the RN-BSN program.

The rest of the Cal states that have a Basic Nursing program are impacted.

nursing programs in CA are absurdly competitive AND our OOS tuition is absurdly high. What’s your home state?

The competition alone will make it difficult for your daughter to be admitted, to say nothing of the difficulty of the coursework, as well as the OOS fees for those smaller schools.

Those schools are not in the typical “California” locales. We’re talking lots of small farm communities except for Dominguez Hills. I’ve driven through those towns and it takes all of 5-10 minutes to drive through. There are no “major” airports to easily get to those towns (exception of Dominguez Hills which is mostly commuter), so you are talking lots of driving through farm country with not a whole lot of things to do.

Does she even want to do nursing?

…and East Bay (aka Hayward), which is a City of 150k surrounded by millions more.

Yes, we have talked about many other possibilities, including community colleges, other majors, and she still wants to try to get into a nursing program at a four year college.

We’re in a western state, and the CalStates I inquired about are a part of the WUE program, so OOS tuition isn’t horrible.

I grew up in SoCal, so I’m fairly familiar with the geography of the CalState campuses.

But I hear you loud & clear about how competitive it is to get in, and how difficult the coursework may be.

Thank you all for your info.
