Like many others, I'm a hopeful applying next year. It seems Dartmouth has the label of being conservative, while Brown is looked at as liberal. I don't know if there's any truth in these......

In the end, it seems Dartmouth is a little of both and I'm not the kinda liberal who needs to be locked away with other liberals discussing how conservatives are all ill-mannered Neanderthals who are beneath my consideration. This is what kept me from going for Brown (although I think Brown is a cool school with lots of people like me who will agree with me and remind me of how right I am day in and day out until I believe the hype!).

I wouldn't let my political views keep me from applying to either of these schools. In fact, it might be better if we learned to compromise with others who have different political opinions. We'll certainly have to deal with it after college, so why not start now?

Political: Liberal, Left-wing, democrat
religion: athiest
culture: huge anti-drug, underage drinking up bringing, so much so that one my think i was a hardcore christian. somewhat asian upbringing, do things now, fast, now, and faster, dont waste time, impatience is a family characteristic. but very materialistic, unlike the rest of my family.

hmmm....actually, i am one of those democrats that cant stand republican politics, was hoping dartmouth was middle ground, maybe even slightly liberal because its outdoorsy+in the northeast. but thats okay, i dont care, i dont need 4000 people to listen to my complaining, 2000 is enough. i wouldnt mind being a voice crying in the wilderness either.

Political: Liberal, Green Party, Democrat (Yeah Northern California! :D).

Religion: Atheist.

Culture: Hmmm... this is a toughie. I think drugs are okay as long as their not too harmful to your health, and as long as you don't put anyone else in danger while you are using them. I believe in the death penalty. I am pro-choice all the way. I am very pro-gun control. I think that being more conscious of our environment is a necessity. I don't agree with giving so much aid to foreign countries (natural disasters being an exception). I also don't agree with our foreign policy (i.e. I don't think that the US has the right to police the world). I think it is very hypocritical to condemn Iran for trying to build nuclear weapons when we have so many. If we have them, they have the right to have them, too. I am fully against the war in Iraq. I think that taxation should be equal across the board- it is unfair to tax really rich people more or less than anyone else. I am also against our extremely lax immigration policies (i.e. I believe that we should cut down on immigration). I believe in marriage for all. And I hate Bush.

not very predictable are you? lol do I hear a chorus behind you?
I'm sure liberals outnumber conservatives at Dartmouth.........for that matter at almost every school in the country. You'll be an easy fit anywhere: that must make finding the right college somewhat easier: it removes one variable.

Wait... is that... sarcasm that I detect? LOL

Seriously, though. I'm not the typical NorCal, Berkeley-esque, hippie-vegetarian! I just happen to agree with a lot of liberal philosophies.

However, a couple of my beliefs do fall into the "conservative" category. For example, I'm pro-death penalty, against exorbitant immigration, and against welfare.

Not to make this into a Bush Bashing thread, but Calidan, I am also in the anti-Bush boat.

As far as Dartmouth and its politics go, although I think of myself as an openminded person who has no problem with the views of others.

Like I said before, I wouldn't compromise my college selection because of political views, but the more I think about it, the more I realize I might be deluding myself. I have to admit it would be very hard for me to keep my sanity in a college where the political views lean to the right.

Middle ground's no problem, but surviving in Bush-Loving territory would take a lot of patience and conviction for me. Also, some "I hate Bush" pharaphernalia might help.........

woohoo, moderate all the way! I'll agree with some conservatives and some liberals, but not on a set fiscal vs. social pattern. (even so, government is my faaaaave class. future pol. sci/int. rel major, right here, what-WHAT! lol. i'm white.)

i'm Jewish...technically. lol. I sometimes find it depressing that 6 of my 8 great-grandparents died in the holocaust (one's still alive, the other was a huuuge anti-communist and Stalin actually ordered him to be executed. For real! Stalin ACTUALLY said "fire!" lol.), and yet my parents are the least Jewish people EVER. My mom eats on Yom Kippur and offers me a piece of her bagel on Passover. When I was like "I should be bat mitzvahed" they were like huh?

I think my mom became extremely disillusioned with the Jewish faith after our trip to Israel, though - we went to the wailing wall, which is divided for men and women to pray. About one tenth of the wall held some fifty or so women - the other nine tenths only held about ten men. She couldn't believe the injustice lol. I might join a Hillel in college to meet people and get back with the faith, but I have to agree with my dad that some rules of the religion were made back in ancient times and are now obsolete. For example, the kosher rule? was made b/c in the desert, shellfish and pork etc. spoiled fastest. Now with this crazy new invention called the refrigerator, there's no reason not to eat shellfish and pork.

Feel free to disagree, though! i hope i didn't offend anyone.

--blu

Oh, P.S. I don't like Bush either. Since back in 8th grade when I actually heard him say "mathematics are the FUNDAMENTARIES in EDUCATIONALIZING our children." my response was like...uh, you might want to concentrate on English, just a bit. lol. But when my friends ran around town at midnight stealing peoples' Bush/Cheney '04 signs, I was at home not caring enough. lol! I still have no idea what is going to be done about Social Security or Iran/North Korea, though, and I'm not sure Bush is the best head of state for it.

Kalide- we definitely will talk. ;) I'll hold you to that if I get in!

PS- bluirinka- I was one of those people that stole Bush/Cheney signs! Of course where I live, there were only about 3 of them, so it wasn't very difficult. :p

hahahaha nooo! San Francisco?! Mostly Democratic?! it couldn't be!

I'll PM you what those people DID with the stolen signs, if you want...in case the victim reads this board lol.

still, i agree that tolerance IS important. I may disagree strongly with people about certain issues and wonder how they've not yet managed to walk into oncoming traffic, but I'll respect that it's their opinion. This ain't Dutch Pennsylvania, people - we don't gots to shun anyone haha

Wow, I can't imagine living in a place with a shortage of Bush/Cheney signs. KY's covered with them. . .although I'm lucky. Louisville's more moderate than most places. Actually, our city voted for Kerry. But it was pretty much the only one in the state :-).

Myself, I definitely have liberal leanings; but I'm open to dialogue on everything. That's something I'm looking forward to, going to college. . .just having a chance to hear opposing viewpoints from people who know their stuff.

SERIOUSLY. I once had to poll my grade on what they thought was the most pressing issue of the moment. Most of them answered "That Bush is a dumbass." And they have nothing to back it up with. not that there isn't evidence, of course.

I ended up writing my G-town SFS essay about it...how in my quest to find the most pressing issue, I realized that IGNORANCE was important to address. lol.

And boy am I glad I don't live in a place that is plastered with Bush/Cheney signs (no offense, sourire!). I might kill myslef if I lived in Arkansas or wherever.

LOL, absolutely no offense taken. It's certainly one of the things I will NOT miss once I'm out of Kentucky.

While we're not necessarily the hicks so many people think we are, the state is undoubtedly conservative (that gay marriage ban amendment in our state constitution, for example?). . .horse-obsessed, and faaar too interested in the local sports rivalries. I don't really fit in :-)

FountainSiren, if you're still around, my interviewer today had Buckley as his class' valedictorian, and was fairly good friends with him. I blew 15 minutes of my hour talking about that. sigh Good times.

"I was one of those people that stole Bush/Cheney signs!"

Um.....I really hope that wasn't a tinge of pride in your actions.
