no longer confused, thanks shellfell. 15-16 credits, not 12-15. got it.

of course, you’re right, meeting one-on-one an advisor to discuss what’s best for her and set the schedule is the key. just trying to understand the system as best i can before that happens (she’s to tied up in exams and graduation requirements right now that she can’t focus on this stuff yet!).
not sure if she’ll get an SMPA advisor or one from CCAS, but, if advising at GW is like it is in most every other school, it really depends on who you get as to how strong the advising is, so it really pays to understand as much of the system as is reasonably possible before talking with them!

also - i knew participating in P&V (if she is even accepted, by no means a certainty) and the scholars in the arts program would put limitations on her freshman year schedule - two of the 4 classes represented in P&V are not requirements for her major (but are of interest to her in general) - just trying to see how limited & what the domino effect might be in subsequent years.

If I remember correctly from 2 years ago, I think Kelts only contacted the sutdents who were accepted into P&V, but I can’t be certain. When S got in, he heard a few days later, apparently because he got in when an accepted student declined…so I guess Kelts keeps an informal waitlist as well. Give it a week before you get concerned.

1sttimemom: You’re right that advising is hit or miss. Before S’ freshman registration, I also tried to help him as much as possible to navigate all the possibilities. Two years ago, freshman registration was in early June (not sure if it’s still so early) & S reigistered for GW the day after his HS graduation, so his head wasn’t really into it yet. I understand the situation you & your D are in now.

Juliana9 - What are your thoughts about the lack of notification for P+V that was suppose to be May 14th according to prior housing e-mails ? Does this mean my “S” didn’t get in, or is the delay in notification due to the extension of freshman housing deadline to Sunday May 16th @ 5pm? I could understand that - since students can still apply for the P&V program til then (even though their application may not be there).

Should my “S” e-mail Professor Kelts? He doesn’t want to “bother” him.

When/how ere you notified last year? Are only accepted students notified?

CJ - no word yet here either. if you wouldn’t mind posting here when/if ya’ll hear something, i will do the same. thanks!

D didn’t receive the email invite to apply until May 10. Emails Prof. Kelts with a few quetions and then overnighted the packet to him which arrived at GW on the morning of May 13. D remarked that that would be a lot of work for him to do to make selections and notifications by May 14th… although he may have had a fair amount of the class filled from earlier apps and he’s been doing this awhile so he probably has it down to a pretty streamlined system by now. :)

1sttimemom- you can take up to 17 credits in a semester. I took 4 courses my first semester including P&V and Intro to Acting, and 4 courses my second semester including UW20. Professor Kelts will let you know if this changes next year, but he signed paperwork for people in P&V my year who did not take UW first semester, and I received credits for both my UW and my WID course simultaneously. There are GCR worksheets your daughter will receive and be expected to look through before meeting with advisors at CI. So basically, don’t worry about taking your UW before unless Stephen Kelts specifies. There are always ways to maneuver through the rules.

CJ Madison- our due date for P&V and for housing was later in May, and I found out about P&V only a few days after the due date he posted. I remember being really surprised at how quickly he accepted me, but as this will be his 8th year running the program he definitely has a system going. We didn’t hear housing decisions until July though, so I’m not sure if that’s different this year.

i’m looking at two curriculum worksheets - one for GCR’s and one for SMPA… although i know this will be officially answered during my D’s advisor meeting, i’m curious…

do things she takes as GCR’s count towards requirements for SMPA?

for example…
… if she takes PSC1 and PSC2 as her 2 courses in Social and Behavioral Sciences (GCR) - but PSC12 and PSC21(or 3) are also on her SPMA worksheet (required prerequisites)… does that mean she shouldn’t take PSC1 and 2 as GCR’s but should take something else instead?
… STAT53 is a prereq in SMPA… could that also serve as one of her GCR Quant/Logic courses?

she has lots of overlaps like that… just curious how that all works?

I’m pretty sure that requiremnts for the major (or minor) can also count as GCRs. That’s certainly how S fulfilled his social science requiremnts. You just can’t count a single course to fulfill 2 different GCR requirements. Frankly, it would be almost impossible to fulfill all the requiremnts if there wasn’t overlap.

1sttimemom: I can’t answer your question flat out as I am an Elliott student but there is some degree of overlap. I would recommend you start looking at the “current student” portion of the website as there are some useful documents there. Looking at the advising booklet there it appears that the CCAS Co-Requisite Courses (5 courses/15 hrs) also can fulfill GCRs. However, that appears to be the limit of double counting for GCRs and SMPA curriculum.

CJ Madison–I got the email today around 12:25. The email was directly from Professor Kelts and it went to my GW e-mail address. It was a pretty long and the subject title was Welcome to Politics and Values!
